Student journalists from Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School picked up the highest achievement award in scholastic editing and publishing from the New England Scholastic Press Association at its annual convention in Boston on April 30.

The honor acknowledged all the newspapers the students published during the 2009-2010 school year.

“We rocked it!” said junior and co-editor in chief Naomi Pallas, when she heard the news about the accolades.

Senior and co-editor in chief Julia Sadowski called the award “a great way to tie up the year.

“It honors everyone — which is perfect since everyone worked so hard all year,” she added.

Several students also received individual awards for excellence.

Senior Ashley Drake won for masthead artwork on the story New Pass System Gives Pause.

Naomi Pallas won for her online slideshow and human interest story, MSPCA Closes Cage Doors. With the award, Naomi became the first Vineyard student to win an award for digital journalism. She also won an award for her news story, Photography Brings Cultures Closer Together.

Senior Caitlin Clark won for her news story, H1N1 Spreads.

The school’s English department chair, Dan Sharkovitz, serves as the newspaper’s faculty adviser.
