Edgartown police last week arrested an 18-year-old man at the Kelley House after he reportedly assaulted two officers.
Nicholas Franklin of Edgartown was charged with assault and battery on a police officer and resisting arrest. Det. Jonathon Searle and officer David Rossi both received scrapes and scratches from Mr. Franklin after they responded to the call.
According to the incident report, police were called to the Kelley House at around 9 p.m. about an intoxicated male who had been getting physical with his family. Upon arrival police talked to the subject’s father, who said his son had been acting up and had marijuana in the room that he shares with his 12-year-old stepbrother.
When police went to Mr. Franklin’s room they found that he had closed himself in the bathroom. When they got him to open the door, he slammed it shut almost immediately. On the second attempt police managed to force the door open, when Mr. Franklin reportedly grabbed Mr. Searle’s throat.
Mr. Franklin charged the officers, who forced him to the ground, where he continued to struggle violently. While the officers attempted to place him in handcuffs, Mr. Franklin struck Mr. Searle several times in the thigh and calf. The officers then sprayed him with pepper spray to attempt to calm him down.
Mr. Franklin continued to resist, even after being placed in handcuffs and placed inside the cruiser. He was arraigned in Edgartown district court on Wednesday, where a plea of not guilty was automatically entered on his behalf.
