The Martha’s Vineyard School of Ballet presents I Do Believe in Fairies — Journey to Never Never Land at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School Performing Arts Center this evening at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 each. Eleanor and Genevieve Hyland, daughters of Thad and Cassandra Hyland of Aquinnah and Edgartown, will be performing as will another little friend of mine, Tate Buchwald, daughter of Joel and Tamara Buchwald, who have recently returned from their winter in Honolulu, all performing with their fellow ballerinas.

The Martha’s Vineyard Relay for Life will be held at the track field at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School this evening. This is a wonderful event for cancer survivors and their family and friends to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. The luminary lighting (8:30 p.m.) is always so sentimental and touching when recalling the memories of those who have departed.

Chilmark Preschool will host their annual spring open house on Saturday, June 5, from 10 a.m. to noon. Stop by to meet the teachers and enjoy the surroundings the three to five-year-olds enjoy each day in their classroom. The heirloom tomatoes which were nurtured by Caitlin Jones and her husband Allen Healy of Mermaid Farm are in, so if you placed your order earlier, today is the day to pick them up and get them planted. On Wednesday morning, June 2, I was one proud grandmother watching my three-year-old grandson, Noah James Manning, and his schoolmates in their preschool violin concert, led by their music teacher Becky Barca Tinus. Noah’s fellow Aquinnah students at Chilmark Preschool include Lillian Duarte, Olive MacPhail, Violet MacPhail and Clyde Smith.

Chief Stephen Barr was honored at a very impressive ceremony at Station Menemsha on May 27. His four years on the Vineyard were very meaningful to Chief Barr and to his family, and he will never forget those he met along the way. One of the most heartwarming discussions we enjoyed was that of the significance of the history of the old Gay Head Coast Guard Station that once sat at the edge of the Cliffs and history of so many Wampanoag men who served. I sincerely appreciated his acknowledgement of our history and the respect and honor he demonstrated for our tribal history and coexistence with the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Life Saving Service as well. All the best to Chief Barr, his wife, Andrea, and their son, Isaac, on their new assignment in Alameda, Calif. They will return — after all, Isaac was born at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital and raised on Martha’s Vineyard.

Nicholas Bibko returned to his home in Syracuse, N.Y. on Thursday after spending five days visiting his daughter, Lisa Bibko Vanderhoop and her husband, Capt. Buddy Vanderhoop. While here Nicholas enjoyed fishing with Captain Bud aboard the Tomahawk, pizza night at the Orange Peel Bakery, ice cream at the Galley, and just relaxing. We will look forward to his return in October.

Joseph Bozyczko, his wife, Vicky, and their children, Michael, Mikayla and Matthew, returned to their home in Holliston after spending the holiday weekend at their summer home on Lighthouse Road.

Maxwell Butler, son of Lenny and Mallory, was home over the holiday weekend, and it was nice to catch a glimpse of him. Nina Butler has returned from her semester in Scotland. Jeffie Butler, her husband, Kevin Sheehan, and their daughter, Maeve, are with Lenny and Mallory for their spring holiday visit.

Michelle Laurie has returned to her home in Aquinnah following more than two weeks of medical care at Massachusetts General Hospital. For now, Michelle and her husband, Phil, are busy packing for their move to Chilmark for the summer. Perhaps you may have a few moments to assist them with their move while Michelle is recuperating from her hospital stay.

Nonie Madison was the guest of honor on Saturday evening in celebration of her birthday at the home of her father, Jeffrey Madison. Of course, her husband and private chef, Dan Sauer, provided delicious delicacies for all to enjoy throughout the evening.

Congratulations to Matthew E. Scott upon receiving the John E. Johnson Award for Journalism at Dartmouth College. Matthew, son of Francis and Linda (Garvin) of Aquinnah, is completing his junior year at Dartmouth. He is a 2007 graduate of Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School and the recipient of the Gates Scholarship.

Noni Smith has opened her Florabelle Shop at the corner of North Summer and Winter streets in Edgartown for the season. Stop by and see Noni for the latest in fashion and flair for women.

Congratulations to Timothy Tracy upon his recent graduation from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Tim will serve in the U.S. Army as an engineer officer. He is the son of Thomas and Jan (Haughton) Tracy of Florida and grandson of Anne Haughton and the late Ronald Haughton of Rockspring in Aquinnah. Tim has spent his childhood summers on the Vineyard.

Naushon Vanderhoop and her friend Vernon returned to Brooklyn, N.Y. on Wednesday after spending the long holiday weekend with her family and friends.

All the best to Durwood Vanderhoop and his wife, Jamie, on their move into their new home off Old South Road. They entertained family and friends throughout the holiday weekend.
