Friends of Aquinnah Public Library and the Aquinnah library trustees would like to invite the community to a reception to honor Jennifer Christy at the end of her day at the Aquinnah Public Library on Saturday, June 19 from 2 to 4 p.m. Jennie has been the director for the past five years and has expanded the collection, increased the usage and created many wonderful programs for the entire community to participate in. We will miss her immensely.

One of Jennie’s last duties is facilitating the sustainable book club which will meet on Thursday, June 17 at 5 p.m. to discuss Carl Safina’s Song for the Blue Ocean. Please feel free to join in the discussion group.

Condolences to the family and many friends of Gilbert R. Silvia who died on Tuesday in Sandwich. Gilbert was the son of the late Antone T. Silvia and Inez W. (Manning). He was an Aquinnah Wampanoag tribal elder and one who generously donated venison for others to enjoy, a master plumber who was proud of the five generations of Silvias and their plumbing work across the Vineyard, and a proud veteran who had always wanted to visit Korea once again. He was a devoted brother, husband, father, grandfather, and adored cousin to many. Visiting hours will be held on Monday evening, June 14 at Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Oak Grove Cemetery in Tisbury with Rev. Roger H. Spinney officiating.

Condolences to the family and friends of Danny Meader, who died on Tuesday after being transferred from Martha’s Vineyard Hospital to Massachusetts General Hospital. Danny worked at the Vineyard Haven Post Office and was known for his offering a helping hand when and wherever needed. Visiting hours will be this evening at Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. with a graveside service on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Cemetery with Rev. David Berube officiating.

Congratulations and all the best to State Police Sergeant Neal J. Maciel, who retired on May 28 after a rewarding and illustrious thirty-five year career in law enforcement on the Vineyard. Neal worked his way up from a police officer in Tisbury, to the Oak Bluffs Police department, to the Registry of Motor Vehicles, to State Police trooper, and ended his long career as Commander of the State Police barracks in Oak Bluffs. He has been at the forefront of the visits of two sitting presidents as well as former presidents visiting the Vineyard, First Ladies, princesses (of a great variety), as well as other dignitaries and luminaries from around the world. I know personally that Neal was pleased to meet one and all but his work around the Vineyard with Vineyarders is what kept him motivated and to see that his community was well-protected and well-served. He was and is a mentor to many. We shall have a grand celebration at a later date. For now, may Neal have an enjoyable and relaxing summer to simply vacation on the Vineyard as he should after his thirty-five years of dedicated service to us all.

Chelsea Ives, daughter of Peter and Clare Ives of Old South Road, was home over the weekend to celebrate her 10th reunion with fellow Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School graduates of the Class of 2000. Their celebration was held at the Sailing Camp over the weekend and reports that it was enjoyed by one and all.

Congratulations to Marguerite Smith on her graduation from the Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School on June 5. Marguerite is the daughter of Hollis Smith and the late Wendy (Weissman), and granddaughter of Donald Smith and the late Patricia (Flanders) and Hugh and Suzanne Weissman of Chilmark and New York.
