Summer Welcome will be held at the Portuguese-American Club on Friday, June 25 from 6 to 11 p.m. for the benefit of the Martha’s Vineyard Center for Living (formerly the Island Council on Aging), which encompasses many programs for those aged 55-plus across the Vineyard. One of the primary programs is the Senior Day Program, presently housed two days a week at the Anchors and two days a week at the Tisbury Senior Center but in need of a new facility to meet the needs of the program on a daily basis.

The evening will be filled with dinner, dancing to the music of deejay Steve McCullough, door prizes and a silent auction — a fun evening for all ages. Tickets are only $10 per person and may be purchased at an outlet in each town and from your respective MVC4L board members representing each town — at Howwasswee Trading Post and from June Manning in Aquinnah, at Menemsha Texaco and from Judy Worthington in Chilmark, at Alley’s General Store and from Diane Jetmund in West Tisbury, at Aboveground Records and from Shirley Dewing, Nancy Shemeth and Olga Church in Edgartown, at Island Entertainment and from Sandy Pratt, Connie Texeira and Ginger Duart in Tisbury, and at the Corner Store and from Karen Achille in Oak Bluffs. Tickets are also available at the local Council on Aging offices in West Tisbury at the Howes House, at the Tisbury Senior Center, the Oak Bluffs Senior Center and Edgartown Senior Center at the Anchors.

The Martha’s Vineyard Center for Living is there to help meet the intellectual, emotional, social, health and economic needs of those age 55 and up, Islanders from the very active to the very frail, from all walks of life. For further information, please call Leslie Clapp at 508-939-9440.

The annual Aquinnah Power Cruise will be held at Aquinnah Circle on Saturday, June 19, from noon to 3 p.m. The Boston Area Roadsters Club will meet and greet people in Aquinnah Circle while displaying their antique automobiles and hot rods. Vineyarders are encouraged to bring their special interest vehicles to join in the fun. This year there will be a race of radio controlled vehicles. The VTA bus stops at Aquinnah Circle. The shops at the Cliff area will be open for your dining pleasure and for gifts. Donations will be accepted for the benefit of Angel Flight, which provides free air transportation for Vineyarders to fly to their medical appointments for chemotherapy and radiation.

A reminder about the reception for Jennifer Christy, who is retiring as Aquinnah Public Library director. The Friends of Aquinnah Public Library and the trustees would like to invite one and all to a reception for Jenny from 2 to 4 p.m. on June 19 at the library. Jenny has been such a bright spot in our Aquinnah life while she has enhanced our library for the past five years in every imaginable way and has been the center for the community with many programs and socials. We will miss Jenny but will still see her around up-Island and especially in Chilmark, where she is the town clerk.

Chilmark Church will hold their annual children’s fair on Saturday, June 19, from 10 a.m. to noon. Admission is free but donations would be gratefully accepted. There will be face painting, pony rides, cupcake decorating and more for the children to enjoy. On Tuesday evenings throughout the summer, the Chilmark Church will sell lobster rolls, chips, iced tea or lemonade for $13, another fun adventure for your family to enjoy.

The Gay Head Lighthouse will be opening this weekend for the season of self-guided tours which begin an hour and a half before sunset and continue until half an hour after sunset on weekend nights. Lighthouse keepers Richard Skidmore and Joan Lelacheur and their volunteers will be there to greet you. Suggested donation is $5.The lighthouse will be closed if it is raining.

There will be a special town meeting on Tuesday, June 22, at the Aquinnah Town Hall at 7 p.m. The meeting should not take very long as there are only a few vital articles to be voted upon. Please try to attend and vote; it is your civic duty.

Condolences to the family and friends of Bruce Eliot, who passed away on Tuesday at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Bruce was the husband of Dr. Gail R. Eliot, former radiologist at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. He was a renowned radio announcer in Manhattan for many years and enjoyed his retirement and especially his golf game in Edgartown.

Otis Jeffers Jr. and his wife, Barbara Ann, returned to their home in Hollywood, Fla., on Wednesday after spending the week visiting family and friends across the Vineyard. They were here especially to attend the graduation of their granddaughter, Meaghan Jacqueline Jeffers, from the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School.

Vineyard authors Susan Klein and Alan Brigish have their new book, Martha’s Vineyard Now and Zen, on the book store shelves this week. The introduction highlights Martha’s Vineyard in transition over the past 30 years. Their book is available at the Bunch of Grapes, Edgartown Books, and at several stores across the Island.

Condolences to the family and friends of Guido Majno, M.D., who passed away in Geneva, Switzerland on May 27. Dr. Majno and his family have been summer residents since the 1960s. He is survived by his wife, Isabel, his daughter, Corinna, sons Luca and Lorenzo, and his grandchildren.

Swarthmore professor Philip Weinstein will discuss his works on William Faulkner this evening at the Bunch of Grapes Bookstore at 7:30 p.m. One of his books is entitled Becoming Faulkner: The Art and Life of William Faulkner. Philip and his wife, Penny, are Aquinnah residents.

Aquinnah town clerk Carolyn Feltz would like to remind everyone that Philbin Beach stickers are now available daily except for Saturday at the town hall from 9 a.m. to noon. The price is $35 for the sticker.

Happy eighth anniversary wishes to Ted and Kristina (Kestenbaum) Leslie as they celebrate on June 21. Happy ninth anniversary wishes to Sonny and Janice (Cook) Sylvia on June 23.

Belated birthday wishes to Aquinnah treasurer Judy (Swartz) Jardin, who celebrated on June 7. Rena M. Fischer celebrated her 95th birthday amid family at their Beetlebung home on June 14.

George Bonham Berz will celebrate his fifth birthday today. Dr. Thomas Green will party on June 20, as will Willy Marden, Susan Heckler Smith and Faith Smalley. Fawn (Vanderhoop) Fantasia will celebrate on June 22. Damon Runyan will party on June 24. Robert Schiller celebrates his special day on June 25.
