Welcome to the world, Noah Aidan Meyer von Bremen! Noah was born on May 30 at 11:59 a.m. at the Danville Medical Center in Danville, Va. He weighed in at 7 pounds, 7 ounces and was 21 inches long. He is the first child of Our Town’s own Sarah LaPiana, who now uses her married name; therefore, the proud parents are Ryan and Sarah Meyer von Bremen. Ryan and Sarah teach in Virginia, so grandma Jill LaPiana flew down for a precious two weeks, granddad Fred LaPiana, head of our public works, slipped away later for a few days. Paternal grandparents are Bernard and Wende Meyer von Bremen of Macon, Ga. They are on their way to visit Noah Aidan as we speak. Sarah is doing great, Ryan is tired. I saw the pictures — just catch up with Jill at her loyal post at Cumberland Farms. What I loved about Jill’s pictures was they were in a real photo book, she didn’t flash hard-to-see images at me from a cell phone. Grandma’s Brag Book! Noah Aidan will make his first Island appearance in August. Let’s hope Jill has him come to Cumby’s to show him off. Congratulations to all.

Welcome to the Island for your first really extended stay, Gene and Maggie Shreve of Indiana. Scroll through the rest of my column and you will see many of the cultural events available for your vacationing pleasure.

One of the events is our library’s monthly mini sale, with a free VHS exchange, great for picking up summer reading or viewing. This is tomorrow, Saturday, June 19 from 1 to 3 p.m. I know you’re within walking distance.

On Saturday Louisa Gould has a special European painting reception, opening at her gallery on Main street. The reception is from 5 to 7 p.m. but the show will continue to run. Also view new works by our Islanders, Donna Blackburn, Jules Worthington and Louisa Gould herself. I’ll see you there.

Our Tisbury Senior Center is hosting its 19th anniversary party on Sunday, June 20 from 2 to 4 p.m. Wow, it seems like just yesterday we were making the plans for this wonderful establishment! I send a special thank-you to Cora Medeiros, who was so instrumental in seeing this project through. There will be music by Ray Frazio and refreshments for all. All age groups are welcome.

Our library is showing a free film at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 22 in the program room, at 7 p.m. The title is Saved by Deportation: An Unknown Odyssey of Polish Jews. Anita Hotchkiss, who made this journey herself, will lead a discussion after the film. I’ll see you there.

I apologize to Elaine Cawley Weintraub for writing that she graduated from Lesley University, as I did; she informs me she was graduated from Cambridge College. Nevertheless, we were in many graduate study classes together. Other than that correction, I still stand by the column I wrote last week.

Our town will surely miss two of our most stalwart citizens: Gilbert Silvia and Danny Meader. Our condolences go out to their families. Believe me, they shall never be forgotten.

Anniversary bouquets go out to Martin and Gail Becker on June 19, to Stephen and Marina Kaufman on June 21, and to Allan and Michelle Berman on June 24.

The birthday bandwagon pulls along Gina Jannace today. Tomorrow is shared by Beatrice Beaucaire, Peg Jackson, Julio Bueno, Antoe Mitchell and Benjamin Eli Tichaur. June 20 is for Laura Kimball, Khalil Khalil and John O’Donnell. June 22 belongs to Michelle Alton, Pam Bahal and Eric Pachico. June 23 is claimed by Byron Kennedy and Charley Wulshleger. And on June 24 Frank T. Bailey, Vanessa Williams and Hamilton Walker take the cake. Many happy returns.
