Swimming classes, water aerobics, yoga and summer camp will be in full swing after this weekend’s official opening of the YMCA of Martha’s Vineyard. The new Y will be marking its grand opening with a small ribbon cutting ceremony tomorrow welcoming members of the community into the much-anticipated facility.

The YMCA is offering daily, weekly, monthly, seasonal and annual memberships. Member benefits include access to all the facilities, such as the pool, conditioning room and select group exercise classes, as well as registering for classes at a member rate.

Jill Robie, executive director of the YMCA, said in an interview earlier this week she was excited, honored and blessed to be part of the opening.

“The impact that the YMCA will have over time is just something people can’t even imagine,” Ms. Robie said. “You have generations of people that grew up in the Y, and that’s what we’re starting here.”

Members of the board, staff, and community will be recognized for years of hard work in developing and realizing a plan for the Island at the ceremony. Ms. Robie remembered looking at 100-year-old photographs from the YMCA in Maine she ran before moving to the Vineyard, and said she hoped that generations of Vineyarders could hold the same memories in the years to come.

The ribbon cutting ceremony is at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the YMCA on Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road. All are welcome.

The YMCA will be open Monday through Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Class registration begins June 19.
