Our heat wave has given us a little reprieve as we now can breathe a little better. It sounds like we are going to have a good Fourth of July and the beaches should be great.
Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Kevin Cleary, Rowna Gruffydd, and Isabella Vasiliadis, who celebrated their day June 26; Jessyca Hernandez and Aidan Smith on June 30; Malik Magnuson on July 1; and to Charles Fenske, who celebrates his day today, July 2.
Returning to the Vineyard to spend the Independence Day holiday with Chrissie Mintz at her Summer street cottage are Alice Kao, Sarah Jones, Tom Schlobohm and Brendan Martin. Hope you all have a great weekend.
On Thursday evening, July 8, at 5:30 p.m. at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum, in the library at Cooke and School streets, you have an opportunity to hear Patrick Ahearn, who specializes in historically motivated architecture and restoration — perhaps you already know some of his work here in Edgartown — provide insight into Historic Preservation and Historic Restoration: What’s the Difference and Are They Compatible? I’m not sure I know the difference. There is a small charge and the lecture is followed by a reception and an opportunity to visit the Pease House galleries where the exhibit, Those Who Serve- Martha’s Vineyard and WW II, Part II showcases some Vineyarder stories from those who served both here and abroad. As we celebrate July 4 this weekend perhaps both Vineyarders and visitors will visit this special exhibit during the week if they are unable to attend Patrick’s lecture.
Reminder to our seniors, The Anchors is closed on Monday while we all celebrate July 4, so seniors need to call today to reserve their Tuesday lunch of chicken Caesar wrap, which sounds really delicious, and as usual call on Wednesday to reserve their gourmet to go which will be chicken marbella, red potatoes and parsley, prepared so deliciously by Diane Wall.
Martha’s Vineyard Magazine has announced its 2010 Best of the Vineyard awards, which featured 77 awards for places, businesses, and activities.
Edgartown businesses not only won 28 categories this year, but some of the best places to kayak, fish, and swim were found in this whaling town. At the top of the list for business wins was Sharky’s Cantina, which won Best Place for Cocktails, Best Family Dining, Best Year-Round Restaurant, and Best Wings, as well as runner-up for Best Bar/Pub. There were runners-up in 25 other categories. Edgartown’s local charm makes it popular among Best of the Vineyard voters.
On Saturday June 26, there were many weddings in Edgartown but I have to confess I attended one of the best.
Congratulations to Melanie Rankow and her new husband, Nick Prescott. Saint Elizabeth’s Church was where they were married, then they strolled down Main street to board a boat that would cruise them to the home of Melanie’s parents, Norman and Margaret Rankow.
It was a beautiful reception, with lots of great food, lots of dancing but most of all lots of good friends. We wish you both the best and here is to a long and happy life together.
I am sure there are many picnics and family parties going on this weekend. I wish you all a happy Fourth of July, but also have a safe one.
Don’t forget the parade at 5 p.m. leaving the Edgartown School promptly.
Have a great week, and keep the home candles burning.
