Community Baptist Church of Gay Head will be having summer services at 9 a.m. While awaiting a new minister, we have had the fortune of guest ministers to carry on our mission and goals.

The Old South Road Association Fourth of July Parade in Aquinnah has really increased in popularity. There were many more children marching this year and more adult participation. Thank you to each and every one of you who made this such a special event for the children.

Now on the north side of Aquinnah — thank you to Captain Rick and his friends for another wonderful surfcasting party on Friday evening. Thank you to Max and Cheryl Batzer and their family for their annual gathering with about 400 of their closest friends from across the Vineyard and across the nation. Always a great evening of meeting old friends that you have not seen for a year and the chance to meet so many new ones. Thank you immensely!

Aquinnah photographer John Wightman will present Island Images at the Bank of Martha’s Vineyard at Beetlebung Corner from July 9 through July 16. John and his wife, Jan, will host a reception on Saturday, July 10 from 5 to 8 p.m. on the lawn at the bank. If you miss the show, John’s works are available at Howwasswee Trading Post at the Cliffs.

Welcome to members of the Massachusetts Society of Genealogists, who will convene their board meeting on Martha’s Vineyard over the weekend and meet members of the Martha’s Vineyard Chapter of MSOG.

Dr. David Silverman will present his new book, Red Brethren, on Friday evening, July 9, at 6 p.m. at the Aquinnah Cultural Center.

The Legend of Moshup will be presented by the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) on Saturday, July 17 at dusk at the tribal building. For further information or tickets, please call 508-645-9265.

The Aquinnah community programs committee is once again offering their swimming program, which is held at the home of Hannah Malkin, who has so generously and kindly offered the use of her swimming pool for the children of Aquinnah to learn how to swim. Sailing instruction will be given by Charles Shipway, who has also been very generous with his time and expertise in teaching our children how to sail. For further information on these programs, please call Betty Joslow at 508-645-3340 or Kristina Leslie at 508-645-3031.

On Saturday, July 10, there will be a meeting with Sydney Asbury, chief of staff to Gov. Patrick. The meeting with Martha’s Vineyard Democrats is to present recent developments concerning the governor’s policies and budget and questions will be answered on a variety of issues. It will be from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Howes House in West Tisbury across from Alley’s General Store.

Raymond Dineen, 15-year-old son of Andrew Dineen and Gayle Delaney and grandson of Walter and Nancy Delaney, won the New England Conservatory Summer Concerto Competition on July 6. He will now be launching his solo career! Raymond will be performing the Bruck Romanze for solo viola and orchestra on July 23 with the New England Conservatory Festival Youth Orchestra at Jordan Hall in Boston.

Betty Joslow enjoyed a recent visit from her daughter Molly. Betty now awaits the arrival of her grandchildren over the summer months.

Terese Lane passed away on March 7. There will be a celebratory tea to honor Terese at the Lane home at 9 State Road in Aquinnah on Sunday, July 11 at 4 p.m., which would have been her 89th birthday. Terese and her late husband, Alvin, were longtime summer residents. For further information, please call Judith Lane at 508-645-3318.

Sincerest condolences to the family of Beatrice Silvia, longtime family friend of many generations. Bea is survived by her children Michelle, T.M. 3rd and Stephen, as well as by sisters and her seven grandchildren, all of whom she loved dearly.

Happy birthday wishes this week to Curtis Maciel, who will party on July 11 and shares the day with Mandy Tomkins.

Michael Colaneri and Jeanne Mayhew Gravely will share the day on July 11 as they have for decades. Chelsea Hobbs will party on July 12.

A very special happy birthday wish to my most favorite publisher in the world, Richard Reston, who took a chance and hired me for this position 17 years ago. Ten trillion words later (according to word count) and it is still flowing. Dick will celebrate on July 14.

Unfortunately, I did not win the Martha’s Vineyard Magazine Best of 2010 on who to have lunch with when I suggested Richard Reston. Oh, well, better luck next year.

Jake Baird will be 10 years old on July 14. John O. Vanderhoop will celebrate on July 15 and shares the day with Tobias J. Vanderhoop, Sonny Silvia and Misha Vandal. Evangeline “Coco” Sanfilippo will party on July 16 as will Otis Burt.
