George Frederic Handel’s Passacaglia, a duo for violin and string bass, will open the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber Music concerts on Monday, August 2 at the Whaling Church in Edgartown and Tuesday, August 3 at the Chilmark Community Center. Robert Schumann’s Marchenbilder for viola and piano, opus 113, Frederic Chopin’s Sonata in g-minor for cello and piano, opus 65, and Franz Schubert’s beloved Quintet, opus 114, The Trout, round out the program.

On stage will be returning guest artists Nancy Wu, violin, her husband Leigh Mesh on string bass, Scott Woolweaver, viola, and Wilhelmina Smith, cello. Pianist Delores Stevens, artistic director of the chamber music society, will join them.

Violinist Nancy Wu, associate concertmaster of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and former member of the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, is married to Leigh Mesh, who is associate principal double bass of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra which he joined in 1993.

Cellist Wilhelmina Smith, founder and artistic director of Salt Bay Chamberfest, has performed with musicians including Yo-Yo Ma and Joshua Bell.

Scott Woolweaver has performed with his viola here many times; he also plays frequently with the Boston Baroque, the Handel and Haydn Society and the New England Conservatory’s Chamber Music East.

Concerts begin at 8 p.m. Tickets are $30 at the door, free for students.
