Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School assistant principal Carlin Hart has been named new principal of the Oak Bluffs school, Vineyard schools superintendent Dr. James H. Weiss confirmed yesterday.
Mr. Hart will replace principal Laury Binney, who announced his resignation in late June after 14 years at the helm of the school. Mr. Weiss said the appointment takes effect next week.
“This will be a transition week . . . but by next week, he’ll be completely in Oak Bluffs,” said Mr. Weiss.
Mr. Hart could not be reached for comment yesterday.
In his career he has moved back and forth between the high school and the Oak Bluffs School. He moved to the high school from the position of interim principal at the Oak Bluffs School, which he held during the 2007-2008 school year while Mr. Binney took a one-year sabbatical. Prior to that, Mr. Hart served as assistant principal in Oak Bluffs for a number of years.
Mr. Weiss said he considered Mr. Hart a “logical choice” for the position, despite the fact that his move to Oak Bluffs will leave open an assistant principal position at the high school. “I really decided after talking with the Oak Bluffs staff that they deserve to have a principal in their building as soon as possible who understood the building and who was committed to making things work. And the high school will certainly have other folks that will pick up the slack there,” said Mr. Weiss. He said he has been meeting regularly with regional high school principal Stephen Nixon to discuss possible candidates for the assistant principal position. “Hopefully we’ll come to some understanding over the next few days as to how we’re going to proceed,” Mr. Weiss said.
The superintendent said he decided to appoint Mr. Hart after speaking to members of the Oak Bluffs School staff, the school committee and other Island administrators. “Oak Bluffs can’t suffer a long transition. It really needs to have somebody there fairly quickly to move it forward. I think Laury Binney’s departure has been a difficult one and we want to move the building forward,” he said. “I think [Mr. Hart] knows the community, I think people know him, I think he’s good at interpersonal relations, which I think right now is going to be a key.”
Mr. Weiss said Mr. Hart has agreed to address three main tasks in his role as principal: “The first one is to build a new vision for the Oak Bluffs School with [assistant principal] Jen Arnold and the staff; the second is to move forward instructionally, doing the things that need to be done. And the third is to take care of the business angles, the nuts and bolts, the management pieces. Those are the three things he’ll have to work on.”
Mr. Weiss said he feels confident Mr. Hart will be able to tackle those goals successfully.
He said Mr. Binney will work with Mr. Hart to prepare him for his new role as principal between now and the beginning of the school year. But by September, the role will be all his. “Really the plan I’ve put in place will have Carlin as the principal as school opens,” Mr. Weiss said.
