Chilmark was saddened this week to learn of the death on Tuesday of Rusty Walton, a longtime public servant who served on many boards at the Chilmark town hall. He was the Chilmark conservation officer and was held in high regard for his knowledge and interest in conservation and the environment. He will be missed by many in Chilmark and beyond.

The place to be on Wednesday night was the Backyard Bash put on by the Chilmark Volunteer Firemen’s Association at the community center. It was a beautiful night, the food was cooking and the smiles were everywhere. Many people came to eat, hear the music and enjoy casual visits with other relaxed Chilmarkers and guests. It was a perfect summer event and we hope the results were profitable for the hardworking volunteer firefighters of Chilmark.

We were all dismayed hearing of the accident on Middle Road this week that killed a milk cow belonging to Allen and Caitlin Healy of Mermaid Farm. Chilmark is proud of the number of new farms that are dotting our landscape, and we are saddened when such accidents occur.

The calendar keeps growing. Here are the events coming up that might interest you and your guests.

Andy Goldman and Susan Heilbron and their seven-year-old grandson, William Goldman, are home from a week visiting Alaska. They explored Glacier Bay and found many exciting things to remember. Congratulations to John Armstrong, who was awarded an oyster grant in Menemsha Pond at the selectmen’s meeting this week. John will be the third fisherman to be growing oysters in the pond. Emmett Carroll and Donald Poole are currently harvesting oysters.
