The corrections: Obviously, a bike ride in Katama for an 80-year-old birthday girl would be an amazing thing. But I misheard the message left for me about Beverley Ann Brush’s celebration plans last weekend. My esteemed colleague, Kay Mayhew of the Martha’s Vineyard Times, had it correct. It was a biplane ride Beverley was anticipating. Time for me to invest in some hearing aids. And, shame on me, August 8 was the first wedding anniversary of my nephew David Gardella and his wife, Liz. I had him married to someone else. Sorry, Liz!

My birthday celebration continued as it seems to every August. Annual August residents Leda Giatti of Riverdale and Carolyn Walters of Tarrytown are staying just across the street. They invited me to Lola’s for a birthday brunch last Sunday, and along came Barbara from Danbury and Ginny from my Old Country. Barbara and Ginny attended the Academy of Our Lady of Good Counsel, as did I, so we had a lot of reminiscing to do. Paul came out in his inimitable hat and lit a sparkler for me as everyone sang happy birthday. During the brunch a large group of Morehouse College alumni came in to party. How lovely to see Paul and Kathy again! Thank you, Leda and Carolyn.

Don’t forget the Chicken Alley Art Show this Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at our Thrift Shop. Lots of collectables and bargains.

Herb Ward’s talk on the downed boat in 1910 off our shores and his great-grandfather’s heroic rescue of the people on board was such a success that he is offering it again tonight at the parish house of the Federated Church in Edgartown at 7 p.m. Admission donations are used for community outreach programs of the church. Children are admitted free.

After the Chicken Alley Art Show, hie thee to the Mansion House Health Club at 5:30 p.m. for another free workout in their August offerings.

Our own Anne D. Grandin invites you to her opening reception of her fabulous art at the Old Sculpin Gallery from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Edgartown on Sunday, August 15. I’ll see you there after the workout.

Author Kate Feiffer, famous for Double Pink and My Mother Is Trying to Ruin My Life, will teach a workshop on writing children’s books. The workshop is offered through the Louisa Gould Gallery, 54 Main street, on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday next week. Cost of the course is $250. You may register at 508-693-7373. As a special treat, her dad, Jules Feiffer, will appear and talk on Friday.

As if we’re not busy enough, the Vineyard Garden Club holds its meeting on Tuesday, August 17 at 1 p.m. at the Old Mill in West Tisbury. Members and nonmembers are invited to hear Soo Whiting talk on How Birds Have Changed. Call 508-693-5334 for more information.

Our library remains ever-active. The continuing film tribute to Katherine Hepburn features The African Queen with Kate and Humphrey Bogart at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, August 17. One of my very favorites. Admission is free.

Tomorrow, August 14 from 3 to 5 p.m., children are invited to the library to work on special Illumination Night and Agricultural Fair projects. On Tuesday story hours in the morning feature songs and music with Julie Austin. On Wednesday at 3 p.m. ages six and up are invited for popcorn and a movie. And on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. the Friends of the Vineyard Haven Library present our own noted cartoonist, author and script writer Jules Feiffer for a free talk. Jules’s cartoons ran for 42 years in the Village Voice and I don’t believe I ever missed one.

I just adore Frances Perkins. Filmmakers Robert and Marjorie Potts are presenting a movie about her wonderful work getting Social Security through the New Deal on Thursday, August 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the M.V. Hebrew Center. Marjorie found a book on Frances Perkins in our library in 1983 and thus received the inspiration for the film. I’ll see you there.

There is not enough room to express the condolences and sing the praises of Patricia Neal, who died last Sunday. Oh how we loved her on this Island! Our deepest sympathy goes out to her large family and many friends.

Nor is there enough room to praise Israel (Jake) Jacobs, Island summer resident and my friend for over 30 years. Jake died last Friday. He will be greatly missed. Our condolences to his family.

Anniversary bouquets go out to Bill and Debbie Little on August 14.

The birthday bandwagon pulls along Patti Diamond today. August 15 is a party for Laura Hudson, Jarred Garde, Brooke Aubin, Carolyn Walters and Leigh Smith. August 16 is shared by Kathy Stuart and Kendra Frakes. August 17 honors Mike Zenick, Gail Partridge, Renata Kinake and Paige Stuart. August 18 is claimed by Cheryl Schrader, A.P. Iacovella, Melissa Dolby and Michael Donovan. And on August 19, Jeff Pratt, Bill Clinton, Helen Szanto — 94! — and Amanda Louise Bernard take the cake. Many happy returns.
