The 12th Annual Ken Williams memorial scholarship fund golf tournament was held on Sunday, August 22 at Mink Meadows Golf Club. More than 50 golfers participated in a day of charitable golfing including three celebrity golfers: Prof. Charles Ogletree, author Roland Martin and Dr. Ewart Brown, Premier of Bermuda.

Ken Williams, who lost his battle with cancer in 1998, was an anti-apartheid activist, humanitarian, jazz promoter and noted self-taught photographer. He was passionate about jazz and golf, and it was his passion for helping people that inspired the scholarship fund. In August 2007, the fund began honoring the memory of the late Mandred Henry, the former Vineyard NAACP president, with the establishment of the Mandred Henry Scholarship for Social Justice. The Ken Williams fund has provided more than $20,000 in scholarship money to a total of 30 college-bound high school seniors; since 2003 there have been 10 awards on the Vineyard. This year Mark Reppert of Oak Bluffs will again be awarded the Mandred Henry social justice scholarship for $1,000. The recipient of the Ken Williams Memorial Humanitarian Scholarship for $1,000 is to be announced.

The Ken Williams fund invites Martha’s Vineyard college-bound high school seniors to apply for 2011 scholarships by sending an e-mail to scholarships@kwmsfund.org. All other inquiries should be sent to general@kwmsfund.org.
