Chilmark is awaiting yet another hurricane as I write. The crowds at the Menemsha beach are enjoying their seafood and sunset with a minimum of concern. I did hear that the town landing at Quitsa was a busy place all day. Let’s hope that there will be no severe results from the passing storm.

Just a thought: harbor master Dennis Jason has had more happen in his harbor this summer than some harbor masters ever experience. Cheers to you, Dennis, and we are all hoping Earl goes out to sea and spares the new dock construction.

Another thought: a severe storm could cause the rubble that was the Coast Guard boathouse to move around the harbor, causing concern. Oh, well, I can always find something to worry about!

The Beach Plum Inn is offering a three-day Martha’s Vineyard yoga festival from Sept. 13 to 16 at the inn over looking the Menemsha harbor. All sorts of events are scheduled with classes and work sessions. Call the inn at 508-645-9454 for all the details.

Best wishes from us all to Elmore (Bud) Mayhew who is at a Boston hospital as I write being treated for injuries resulting from a fall. We all hope that he will be home soon and out and about.

Please remember that the Chilmark library has returned to fall and winter hours. They will offer a book talk by Tom Dunlop on Sept. 8 at 5:30 p.m. Tom’s book, Schooner: Building a Wooden Boat on Martha’s Vineyard, is about the building of the Rebecca at the Gannon and Benjamin boatyard in Vineyard Haven. The talk is open to the public at no charge and is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

Perry Mehrling and Judy Banker Mehrling have enjoyed a visit from their son, Adam, and his wife, Joanne, and their children, Eva and Max to their Chilmark home, Boulder View.

Conrad and Jane Neumann are entertaining a good friend, Ann Morgan-Hughes, of Wortwell, England, who has come for a week’s visit. Ann is a rare book dealer, specializing in textiles.

There is still another week to enjoy your favorite haunts of summer, restaurants and the like, as none seem to be planning to close until after the holiday. I’ll supply a list next week.

Hugh and Suzanne Weisman are sharing their joy at the arrival of their granddaughter, Ruby Leilani, who was born on August 25 to their daughter, Ali, and her husband, Malcolm McDowell. Congratulations to all!

Please note that the Island schools resume on Tuesday, Sept. 7. No doubt teachers, students and parents are asking, as I am, where did the summer go?

Well, storm preparations, end of the season work chores and the possibility of a family gathering this weekend have conspired to prevent me from newsgathering. I hope I will have lots to talk about next week.
