An Island motorcyclist was airlifted to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston last night after he struck another motorcyclist near the entrance to the Airport Mobil Station on Barnes Road in Edgartown, according to Edgartown police.

Peter Valach, 24, of Vineyard Haven, was traveling at a high rate of speed when he hit Ryan Willoughby, 20, also of Vineyard Haven, who was pulled over to the side of the road on his motorcycle. A witness at the scene estimated Mr. Valach’s speed at 120 miles per hour, police said.

Mr. Valach was ejected from his motorcycle and found 575 feet away from the accident site in serious condition, the police report said. His motorcycle collided with a tree, splitting it in two.

Edgartown police were dispatched at 6:40 p.m. Monday to the accident scene, where they found the two victims and their totaled motorcycles. Barnes Road was closed to traffic for two hours during accident scene reconstruction.

Mr. Willoughby and Mr. Valach were both transported initially to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital; Mr. Willoughby was treated for hand injuries and Mr. Valach was flown to Boston. The accident is under investigation by the Edgartown police.
