Chilmark is getting strangely quiet. It will soon be routine, but the first few weeks of silence take some getting used to! We will still have the banks, the post office, the Menemsha Café and the fish markets in which to meet and greet each other but not much else will be open after this weekend. However, be sure and call your favorite store just in case the weather remains mild and business is still being conducted.

The Menemsha Café is planning on serving dinners on Friday evenings as well as their regular breakfast and lunch routine.

We send many good wishes to Ozzie Fischer, who celebrated his 96th birthday on the 5th. He is a much loved and appreciated citizen of Chilmark and he can always make you chuckle with his wit. Cheers from us all!

Congratulations to Donny and Hildy Mitchell of Vineyard Haven on their recent wedding anniversary. Donny grew up in what we now call the Mayhew Mitchell house in Quansoo. The Sheriff’s Meadow Association is now planning a restoration of that lovely old Chilmark historic home.

Terrie Jensen was in from the West Coast for a fall visit to her family home in Menemsha. Her guests were Terry Ousey and Nancy Dart. They enjoyed the fine fall weather as they completed the closing-up chores.

Dick and Pat Cudmore came over from Falmouth for a week of derby fishing and visits with old friends.

I am happy to report that Mildred Mayhew has resumed her frequent walks in town. Her friends and neighbors are happy to see her out and about.

Dave Mayhew came east for a visit with his dad, Elmore, who is recovering from injuries suffered last month in a fall. We were happy to see him out riding and visiting friends this week.

Ruth Major and Janet Messineo, two Vineyard Haven artists, will be showing their art work at the Chilmark bank until Oct. 15. Ruth does oil paintings and Janet does sculptures.

Robert and Emma Shalhope enjoyed a trip to Manchester, England, to visit their daughter, Adelaide, and her new husband who live there.

Linda Thompson will be showing her recent paintings at the Chilmark Public Library through Oct. 28. The reception will be on Saturday, Oct. 9 from 3 to 5 p.m. The pictures can be seen during regular library hours.

Lillian Kellman, every child’s favorite storyteller, will tell stories for children five years old and up at the Aquinnah Library on Saturday, Oct. 9 at 11 a.m. The Aquinnah library is offering children’s story time and crafts on Tuesdays from 4 to 5 p.m. at the library.

I have a suggestion for those of you who might find that the fall and winter seasons leave you with down time. Try attending the selectmen’s meetings at town hall. All citizens are welcome to attend and see their town government at work. So much is going on in town and you can catch up on what interests you. In the past few weeks I have listened to the U.S. Coast Guard contingent discuss the July fire, I have heard many ideas regarding what to do with the Tea Lane Farm. and this past week I heard a number of young Chilmark fishermen discuss the new mussel farming off our shores. Come out and learn what’s cooking in Chilmark! The next meeting is Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the town hall.

The Chilmark Firemen’s Association will host the annual children’s Halloween party at the Community Center on Oct. 31. All Chilmark children are welcome. Check the Chilmark Web site for details or call Katie Carroll.
