Field hockey turned in an impressive performance last week, pushing their season record to 6-2-2 with wins against league opponent Somerset on Thursday and Notre Dame-Hingham on Saturday. Angela DeBettencourt and Megan McHugh scored for the Vineyard in their 2-1 Somerset win, with Maggie Johnson assisting on both goals. Johnson turned in a goal of her own in the 3-1 Saturday victory, as did McHugh and Genevieve Hammond. The team plays Barnstable in an away match today, and takes on Nauset next Tuesday.
The golf team defeated a series of opponents last week, sneaking a close 252-255 victory over Falmouth at home on Wednesday before trouncing Somerset 249-273 the very next day. A 257-263 win against Coyle-Cassidy completed the week, giving the Vineyarders a 10-3-0 record going into another busy week. The team plays Chatham at home today before heading off-Island to Whitman-Hanson on Tuesday. They return home for a match against Harwich on Wednesday.
Boys’ soccer took a 3-2 win over Coyle-Cassidy last Tuesday, making up for an 0-0 tie against Chatham on Saturday. Goals were scored by Griffin Gardner, Jack Roberts (assist from Augusto Nunes), and Jacob Lawrence. The team is off for the remainder of the week before returning to action next Thursday in an away match against Bishop Feehan.
The girls’ team dropped a match 4-2 Tuesday against Coyle-Cassidy opponents. They will meet Bishop Feehan this coming Tuesday in an away match.
Girls’ cross-country saw its first loss of the season against Coyle-Cassidy last Wednesday, although Megan Dreyer and Shivonne Schofield turned in third and fourth place performances, respectively. The team is now 3-1. The girls also took 25th of 32 teams at the Bay State Cross-Country Invitational on Saturday. Schofield finished 37th of 230 entrants with a time of 21:14.
On the boys’ side, cross-country took a 25-30 victory over Coyle Cassidy. The Vineyarders finished 3-4-5-6-7 in the meet, with Willy Nevin turning in the fastest Vineyard time (17:19). Mr. Nevin also turned in the fastest Vineyard time Saturday at the Bay State Invitational, finishing 27th (of 252) overall with a time of 17:14. The boys finished seventh of 34 teams.
Both teams will compete in three meets in the coming week, with the McIntyre meet on Saturday and races against Somerset and Bishop Feehan on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. The Bishop Feehan meet, which begins at 3 p.m., is the last chance of the season to see the runners compete at home.
