School enrollment on the Island remains relatively flat with last year, according to a census released this week.

The school census is done each year on Oct. 1 for the five elementary schools and one regional high school.

Total enrollment is 2,019, the same as last year, although enrollment is up and down at various schools.

Chilmark, Oak Bluffs, Tisbury and Edgartown all have more students. The most significant increase is in Chilmark which has 13 more students for a total of 53 students in the K through 5 school.

“That’s a big jump for us,” head of school Susan Stevens said this week. She said most of the increase can be tracked to the large incoming kindergarten class, where an assistant was hired. “It’s a good group of new kids. We’re really excited that we’re growing,” Mrs. Stevens said.

The Tisbury School has 28 more students with a total enrollment of 319. Enrollment in West Tisbury School dropped by seven for a total of 259. At the Oak Bluffs School total enrollment is 403, an increase of five over last year, and in Edgartown the total is 318, an increase of six.

Enrollment at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School dropped by 30 students this year, a trend that has been ongoing for the past few years. Total enrollment at the high school is now 682.

The census is conducted annually as part of the public schools’ membership of the New England School Development Council. “It looks at trends over time, and the trends have been telling us that it will be stable,” Vineyard schools superintendent Dr. James H. Weiss said. “There were no surprises.”
