The Committee to Elect Neal J. Maciel for Sheriff of Dukes County will present a night of food and laughs on Wednesday evening, Oct. 20, from 7 to 10:30 p.m. at Sharky’s in Edgartown. One of our favorite Vineyard comedians, Lenny Clarke, will keep us laughing for hours with his wit and wisdom. Tickets are $20 at the door, or from Neal’s committee members.
The staff and patrons of Linda Jean’s restaurant have been planning a cookbook for quite a while now. You will not be disappointed with their favorite recipes. Stop by Linda Jean’s and purchase one of their book for $12. The proceeds will go towards the Food Pantry and the Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard.
Absentee ballots will soon be available. If you would like an absentee ballot, please write to your respective town clerk requesting one. Each voter must request his or her own ballot.
ACE-MV — Adult and Community Education of Martha’s Vineyard — will present a cultural festival this evening from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $15 each, with free admission for children under 12. The diverse cultures of the Vineyard will be represented through music, history and foods. Performances will be by Jemima James and Dan Waters, Nina Violet, Leandro and Gunga, Black Brook Singers and Drum, Susan Klein and Alan Brigish with their new book Martha’s Vineyard Now & Zen, and many more artists and artisans. There will also be a silent auction, and many local vendors featuring their ethnic arts. Also featured will be the displays from Ethnic Studies Week. Tickets will be available at the door or at Aboveground Records in Edgartown, Alley’s in West Tisbury, Bunch of Grapes in Vineyard Haven, and C’est La Vie in Oak Bluffs.
Martha’s Vineyard Museum is presenting Your Town, Our Island, with a new display featuring the unique personalities, histories and stories of each of the six Vineyard towns. Saturday, Oct. 16 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. will be the day for free admission for residents of Aquinnah and Chilmark, as well as a discounted membership for the year. Enjoy the exhibits.
Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish will be performing at Nectar’s tomorrow evening for one of the season’s final performances; Nectar’s will close at the end of the month, until next year.
A few corrections to my story one week ago about the Martha’s Vineyard Center for Living. Our pledge is to find a home. Not a new home but a permanent home for the benefit of the clients, their families, and the staff. I also forgot to mention our newest board members, Barbara Harnen of Tisbury and Kimberly Carlos, a member of the Supportive Day Program staff — sorry ladies. Thank you to all of the community members who attended our annual meeting on Tuesday night at the Tisbury Senior Center. Your support and encouragement are truly treasured.
On Sunday, Oct. 17 at 3:30 p.m. the Mansion House free exercise program will be an aquatic exercise class in the pool.
During the week of Oct. 23 through Nov. 1, the Island will be invaded by the annual scarecrow festival, in which Island businesses make a contribution to the Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School in exchange for a handsome scarecrow. There will be a literary theme this year. Call the school to request a scarecrow for your storefront!
The season is coming to an abrupt halt much too fast this year, after we enjoyed a relatively sunny summer season. Now we are seeing the autumn colors on most of the trees, while the temperature dipped into the 30s on Wednesday night. The Aquinnah Shop closed over the weekend, as did the Outermost Inn, the Dreamcatcher, and Chilmark Tavern. The shops are still open each day at the Cliffs for your shopping pleasure, with great sales in each one.
Samuel Scott was home for the weekend from his sophomore year studies at Nichols College.
Luc Woodard was home for the holiday weekend from his freshman year studies at St. George’s School in Newport.
