Around the World in Three Hours

Ethnic studies week is approaching but no worries; there won’t be a test in the traditional sense. Instead, the test will be how much good food and fun you can enjoy during one evening.

The event is a benefit for Adult and Community Education of MV (ACE MV). It takes place at the Performing Arts Center of the high school on Friday, Oct. 15. It runs from 6 to 9 p.m. That’s just three hours to pack in a smorgasbord of talent.

There is eating. The ethnic food court will include fare from many local restaurants including Deon’s, the Golden Swan, Tropical Brazilian Bakery and the ArtCliff Diner. Chef Marvin Jones and other local chefs will also be on hand to dazzle with international culinary treats.

There will be cultural performances. Enjoy demonstrations of salsa, capoeira, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, plus music from around the world. And if you dare peer into the deep distance, Zapotec fortune telling will be on hand.

There will be music. The evening culminates with a concert featuring MC Sterling Bishop of R and B Entertainment, the Black Brook Singers, Leandro and Gunga, Jemima James and Dan Waters, Nightmares and Dreams: Immigrant Voices, Nina Violet with her band, and Susan Klein with Alan Brigish on Martha’s Vineyard Now and Zen Island culture.

All this for a mere $15 (children under 12 free).

Tickets may be purchased at Aboveground Records in Edgartown, Alley’s Store in West Tisbury, C’est la Vie in Oak Bluffs, Bunch of Grapes in Vineyard Haven and online at acemv.org.
