Chilmark has very little in common with the country of Chile, however, after this week we are all aware of our human link and how like one another our fears and emotions are! In this amazing era of instant visual and verbal communication we have been able to witness on our televisions the latest in technology and the agelessness of human emotions. It has been an exciting week and we send good wishes to all those who were involved in the copper mine rescue. I fully expect that there is a Vineyard connection somewhere and am eager to hear about it!
The good news this week is that the Seaport Advisory Council, at their meeting on Oct. 7 in Fairhaven, awarded our town $200,000 toward the emergency dock repair in Menemsha. Selectmen Warren Doty, Frank Fenner and Jon Mayhew traveled to the meeting and were most happy with the council’s award.
Tomorrow, Oct. 16, is Chilmark and Aquinnah Day at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum. The exhibit this month is called Your Town, Our Island, and tomorrow Chilmark and Aquinnah folks are invited to visit free of charge from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Exhibits will feature special events, people and the history of each town. One such event will be the showing of a film of the late Eric Cottle, popular Chilmark lobsterman, talking about the deaf of Chilmark. We hope some of you can make it, and we hope next year to get earlier notice! The museum is on School street in Edgartown.
Congratulations to Katie Vincent and Nick Persons, who became engaged on Oct. 8 while visiting Katie’s Chilmark home over the holiday weekend. Nick took advantage of an appropriate moment while visiting the Edgartown Lighthouse to pop the question. The couple lives in Niskayuna, N.Y. Katie is the daughter of Bill Vincent and niece of the late Robert Vincent. The family has long Chilmark roots. Cheers from us all!
Longtime seasonal residents of Chilmark, Peter and Carol Bouyoucos of Bedford, N.Y., returned to their Middle Road home for the Columbus Day weekend accompanied by Carol’s dad, Colin Greenan, of Aurora, Ohio. Congratulations to Carol, who is a member of the National Garden Club of America, Bedford chapter. It is the club’s centennial year, and Carol designed the winning logo to be used during this important year.
Larry and Janet Bell of Scarsdale and Chilmark are happy to tell us of the engagement of their daughter, Jennifer, to Joseph Levine. Joseph found the right moment to propose while on Menemsha Beach on Oct. 9. He is the son of Jerry and Arlene Levine of Scarsdale. Jennifer and her family have been Chilmark seasonal residents for several generations and her many friends here send best wishes to the happy couple.
Friends of Ethel Whitman will be happy to hear that she is currently in a course of physical therapy and is recovering from her recent fall. She enjoyed a birthday celebration at her daughter Jane’s home in Rhode Island, and she sends thanks to her friends for all her letters and cards.
Chilmark seasonal resident Linda Levy sends word that her novel, A Kingdom of Madness, written 21 years ago, is now available at Amazon.com.
Fishermen still line the jetty and fill the parking lot at Menemsha when tide and wind allow, but the fishing hasn’t been good this derby season. We have had extreme high tides from the new moon and the wind has been blowing for many of the derby days. Derby fishermen and women have a special dedication!
Chilmark and Aquinnah libraries are providing lots of entertainment for children. Chilmark has an after-school program on Wednesdays from 3 to 4 p.m. This coming Wednesday they will read stories and make masks for the upcoming Halloween celebrations. The Aquinnah library is offering a Friday after-school program from 4 to 5 p.m. for children. They will read stories and do crafts with pumpkins and gourds.
Next week we will post all the Halloween goings on for the young and young at heart in town.
The selectmen’s meeting is Tuesday, Oct. 19, at 7:30 p.m. at the town hall.
