The colors are starting to turn our Island into a fall paradise. The trees by the Episcopal Church are turning orange and complimenting the brick building.
Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Julia Gomes, who celebrated her day Oct. 4; Michael Morris, Oct. 6; Taylor Blair and Matthew Davies, Oct. 7; to Oliver Lively, Marcos Rodrigues and David Sweitzer Jr., who all celebrated their day Oct. 8; Erin Hill Oct. 9; Sykes McMahon, Oct. 11; and to Kenneth Cook III on Oct. 14.
Happy anniversary wishes go out to a special couple. Donny and Hilda Mitchell celebrated their 59th anniversary on Oct. 8. They were my neighbors in Vineyard Haven when I grew up. Donny and my dad could be seen many nights on the beach fishing together when Donny was home from swordfishing. Here is to many more years together.
Anniversary wishes also go out to Dennis and Helen Gibson, who celebrated their 50th anniversary also on Oct. 8. They celebrated up in Saratoga, N.Y., as their granddaughter Amanda was getting married. Dennis and Helen drove up with their daughter, Kim, and on their way they picked up Kim’s son, Justin. When they arrived in Saratoga, they had dinner at the Olde Bryon Inn. Here is to many more years together.
The week that our cousins Sonny and Cindy were here visiting us from Louisiana flew by. We had a great time, and they got to visit friends. We did some fishing and went out to eat to their favorite places. Now we have next year to look forward to.
One of their new favorite places to eat is Sharky’s, which was not here when they lived here. We introduced them one night and they were hooked. I’m not sure if it was the gaucho steak or the giant hot cookie with ice cream that hooked us at the first bite.
This past week Ralph was admitted to our new hospital for a few days. We had our first look at the inside. The ER staff was great and the facility is well packed for all incidents. The staff, as usual, were great, and we were thankful to see many familiar faces.
When we went upstairs to his room, it seemed we might be at a Holiday Inn. The rooms were large, with a full-size couch that can be pulled out to a bed, a full bath, flat screen TV and a view of the harbor for watching the boats coming in and out. If it weren’t for the needles and the tests and whatever, I don’t think Ralph would have left. But he is home and fully recovered, thanks to Dr. Lamb and all the great nurses.
From the week of Oct. 23 to Nov. 1 the Island will be invaded by the annual Scarecrow Festival. Last year over 80 Island businesses made a contribution to the Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School and in exchange they received a handsome scarecrow. This year’s Scarecrow Festival will have a literary theme, so keep your eyes peeled for Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter, Huckleberry Finn and all their pals!
Edgartown residents and businesses are featured in the new issue of Martha’s Vineyard Magazine’s Home & Garden. The article A Builder’s Dream House looks inside the new house on Sengekontacket designed and built by Peter Rosbeck. Also in the issue, Lorraine St. Pierre writes about the memories residing in an old family rocker.
The fourth annual Martha’s Vineyard Food and Wine Festival takes place today and tomorrow. The festival includes wines from around the world and foods prepared by chefs from Martha’s Vineyard and New England, spread over two days of events. Indulge in locally grown produce from the sea and Island farms, and enjoy world-class entertainment. A full list of events is online at mvfoodandwine.com. Some proceeds from the festival will benefit the Martha’s Vineyard Boys’ and Girls’ Club, the Martha’s Vineyard Museum, and the YMCA of Martha’s Vineyard.
Good luck to all those who fished hard in the derby. The derby comes to an end this weekend, and families will be together for at least one night. However, bow season opens Monday. If you are walking near the woods, beware.
Debbie Norton was here for a week with her mother, Jan. Jan’s husband, Floyd, traveled to Indiana to spend time with their son and daughter in law, Stuart and Cathy. Jan said Debbie kept her hopping. Floyd, now home, had a great time. So things are back to normal at the Norton house.
Have a great week, and keep the home candles burning.
