The architectural team chosen to design the expansion of the West Tisbury Free Public Library facility will present an analysis of potential library sites at a public forum on Monday, Oct. 25 at 5:30 p.m., at the library, with refreshments.

Conrad Ello and Matt Oudens, of the Boston-based firm Oudens-Ello Architecture, will give a presentation that includes advantages and disadvantages of various sites. Moderated by trustee Dan Waters, the forum will outline future steps leading to the final vote at annual town meeting in 2012, and will invite public comment on all phases of the project.

At 5,600 square feet, the West Tisbury library is the second-smallest town library facility on the Vineyard, yet it has the Island’s largest materials collection and highest direct annual circulation. Expansion of the building has been discussed for over ten years. In a 2007 report, the space needs committee predicted the eventual need to approximately double the library’s size to accommodate town growth, at a cost of about $5.6 million.

In 2009, the state announced an unusually generous round of library construction grants, with an application process beginning in 2010. To qualify for a grant that would pay about half the cost of expansion, the West Tisbury library must present a detailed design proposal and demonstrate strong community support for the project, including raising $1.2 million in private donations and a $1.3 million appropriation from the town.
