Four regional high school teachers have been invited to present a professional workshop at the National Council of Teachers of English annual convention in Orlando, Fla., the first time in the school’s history that an interdisciplinary team of teachers has been honored with this opportunity.

Kate Holter and Corinne Kurtz from the history department, and, from English, Bill McCarthy and Dan Sharkovitz, will present their session, titled The Inverted Periscope: How to Find the Monsters of Insight Under the Sea, on Nov. 21.

California teacher, author and literacy specialist Jim Burke will serve as the chair of the Vineyard teachers’ session. Mr. Burke wrote one of the most widely used texts about English teaching in the country, The English Teacher’s Companion: A Complete Guide to Classroom, Curriculum and the Profession. He also created the innovative online meetinghouse called the English Companion Ning, where teachers worldwide share teaching ideas and resources. Some of the Vineyard teachers’ presentation developed in part during online conversations with teachers on the English Companion.

“We may be isolated geographically, teaching on an Island, but that does not mean our pedagogy has to suffer,” said Ms. Kurtz. “The fact that we were invited to present at a national conference indicates we are doing some important and cutting-edge work here.”
