Ah, New England weather. It was 38, windy and damp; it was 55, sunny and warm enough for a T-shirt. Who knows what will be next?

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Marshall Davidson and Noah Smith, who celebrated their day Nov. 15; Kelly Cleary, Hiaggo Gonsalves, Ashlyn Headley and Audrey McCarron, who all celebrated their day Nov. 17; and to Mylienna de Oleveira, who celebrated her day Nov. 19.

There is a new deli in town. R& B’s Eatery is located by Al’s Package Store, in the space formerly known as Cuylers, Tom, Dick or Harry’s. The new operators are Rebecca and Bob Ackerly, who have been the chefs at the high school for over 30 years and now are sharing their fine cooking with us. I have eaten there a few times; the food is great and you can meet all the locals there, eating breakfast, talking or catching up on the news in the paper. Give it a try; I don’t think you will be disappointed.

The Federated Church of Edgartown will hold its Festival of Wreaths on Thursday, Dec. 2, from 6 to 9 p.m., in the parish house on South Summer street; 75 hand-decorated natural wreaths, for home and business, will be on display in the Meetinghouse for a silent auction. Admission is $10, which includes hors d’oeuvre and two glasses of wine. Proceeds benefit the 1820 Sara Mayhew Parsonage. For details, call the church at 508-627-4421.

The Felix Neck Sustainable Book Club is currently reading Now or Never: Why We Must Act Now to End Climate Change and Create a Sustainable Future by Tim Flannery. The club will meet Saturday, Nov. 20, at 10:30 a.m. at the Trustees’ regional office at 860 State Road in Vineyard Haven. For more information, call 508-627-4850.

Samantha Maltais, daughter of Dan and Cheryl Maltais of Edgartown, is having a fantastic first year at St. George’s prep school in Newport. Sami is maintaining her A average and doing great on the freshman soccer field. She has been awarded the Athlete of the Week, scoring winning goals for her school in some of the games. The Maltais family would also like to say a special hello to Mrs. Mari Harman of Edgartown, whose husband Archer was a past Head of School at St. George’s.

I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving. Safe travels to all who are going to relatives’ homes either near or far. Remember those who do not have families or are alone for the holidays; a visit or phone call could make their day.

Have a great week, and keep the home candles burning.
