M. Alan Lovewell, 28, of Monterey, Calif., this week was awarded a two-year fellowship from the West Coast Sea Grant to help in their marine resource management efforts for Oregon, Washington and California.

Sea Grant is a federally funded program through the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration. The West Coast Sea Grant program ícoordinates conservation management efforts in such areas as íocean energy, fisheries and resource extraction, as part of the West Coast Governors Agreement on Ocean Health signed in 2006.

Mr. Lovewell did graduate work in both fisheries management and ocean conservation. Last year Mr. Lovewell worked for the Nature Conservancy and Conservation International in Bali, Indonesia, helping coastal communities preserve their fragile coral reefs. Two years ago he worked for the New England Fishery Management Council in Newburyport on the troubled herring fishery.

Next week Mr. Lovewell graduates from the Monterey Institute of International Studies, with a major in international environmental foreign policy. He graduated from the University of California at Santa Cruz in 2005. He graduated from the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School in 2000.

His mother is Teresa Yuan of Edgartown. His father is Mark A. Lovewell of Vineyard Haven. His sister Emma Lovewell lives in New York city.
