Christmas Decorations
With an Ulterior Motive
Michael Helgert and his husband, Rev. Robert Hensley, the rector of Grace Episcopal Church in Vineyard Haven, share a love of the holiday season that they in turn share with their neighbors. Every year since they arrived on the Island they have decorated the rectory at 36 Woodlawn avenue in Vineyard Haven for the Christmas season. Each year they add something new, be it a lighthouse, an airplane piloted by Snoopy, or an additional polar bear as a subtle reminder of the fragility of our environment.
This year in addition to an audiovisual surprise, they have added an empty manger for the purpose of collecting canned goods and other essentials for the Island Food Pantry. Friends and neighbors can show their appreciation for their display and their holiday spirit by leaving an “offering” for the food pantry at the foot of the herald angel in front of the display.
The display will be up and running every evening through New Year’s Day.
