“Oh, the weather outside is frightful, but the fire is so delightful!” I hope you have all been keeping warm on these nice, cold days we have been having. Just think, in August we are going to pray for cool. I am still waiting for the snow; that will set the whole season in motion.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Danielle Oteri, who celebrated her day Dec. 11; Alexandra Ellis and Charlie Morano, Dec. 12; Mathias Gundersen and Margaret Moffett, Dec. 14; Lucy Enos, Dec. 15; and to Alex Vasiliadis, who celebrated his day Dec. 16.

Special wishes go out to Kassidy Bettencourt, who celebrated Dec. 13.

We had the pleasure to be away last weekend to attend the wedding of my nephew Douglas Noble. His bride, Lori Boulanger, was a beautiful December bride and it was a great day to be with family and meet a now-extended family. I wish them all the happiness in the world: Here is to a long, happy and healthy life together.

We got home in time to enjoy the Pats game, which was in Chicago so we were glad to be sitting in our living room watching it. However, Linley Dolby and her husband, David Weagle, were among the many fans in Chicago watching the game. As she has said, the game was great and, to quote her Facebook post after the game, so was “thawwwwinngg!”

I have had a lot of e-mail concerning the Red Stocking fund. They are low on toys and would love donations. If you are able to contribute, you can take gifts to the Grace Church in Vineyard Haven where they are putting things together.

As many of you know, it is the season to keep the home candles burning, which was a tradition started in this family by my parents when my brothers were in the service, to guide them home safely. It is one I still do, only I do it year-round now as there are many service men and women who devote their lives to our freedom everyday.

The service people have been on my mind, especially after losing three Massachusetts men in the past few weeks. It makes the segments we see on TV of men and women coming home to their families even more special.

As a closing for this column this week I would like to share an e-mail I received from Melanie Rankow Prescott. It seems like a great idea and goes with the theme of this column this week. I do hope you take a minute to join in. Thank you, Melanie. The headline read, Xerox Is Doing Something Cool. If you go to this Web site, LetsSayThanks.com, you can pick out a thank you card and Xerox will print it and it will be sent to a soldier that is currently serving in Iraq. You can’t pick out who gets it, but it will go to a member of the armed services. How amazing it would be if we could get everyone we know to send one! It is free and it only takes a second.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the soldiers received a bunch of these? Whether you are for or against the war, our soldiers over there need to know we are behind them.

This takes just 10 seconds and it’s a wonderful way to say thank you. Please take the time and please take the time to pass it on for others to do. We can never say enough thank-yous.

Thanks for taking the time to support our military!

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
