World Team Tennis debuted at the Vineyard Tennis Center Workout and Spa on Sunday, Dec. 12. Ladies’ doubles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles were played in a team format.

Dave Larson coached the Sharks and Connie McHugh coached Ray and the Quahogs.

Each division played a full set with no ad scoring. Let serves that landed in were “good” and could be played by either receiving team player. Cheering and coaching were also allowed.

The Sharks kicked off the afternoon by winning the ladies’ doubles 6-3. Their team consisted of Sara Moore, Kelly Hess, Cathy Lattanzi and Lili Cooperrider. World Team Tennis allows the coach to substitute throughout the match. Dave Larson used all his women players during the ladies’ doubles match. Connie McHugh did the same, rotating in Susan Stevens, Doreen Rezendez and Sue Peltier.

The Sharks also dominated men’s doubles. They won the set 6-1. The Sharks rotating players included Paul Ulyatt, James Prichard and Lili Cooperrider.

The men who played doubles for Ray and the Quahogs had tied games but could not pull enough points together to break the streak; Todd Hollister, Ray Lincoln and Deurward Hughes bowed graciously.

To complete the afternoon, two mixed doubles matches ran simultaneously, with all the team players moving in and out of both matches. The Sharks prevailed over the afternoon 24-11 and a rematch was scheduled for Jan. 9.
