Sunday and Monday nights the wind velocity was more than we would normally experience even in a typical northeaster. It has been exceptionally cold, in the single digits, all week but we can expect the temperature to be in the high 40s over the weekend.

We were fortunate not to have had the foot or two of snow that others experienced along the eastern seaboard. Thank you to all the emergency personnel who worked above and beyond to keep us safe and sound across the Vineyard on Sunday night during the heavy rain and sleet. The Nstar workers certainly had their hands full as well with downed wires, transformer issues and power outages in each town. In Aquinnah it was for nearly eight hours.

Thank you to Michael and Eleanor Hebert for checking on me during the height of the storm, knowing I was without power and telephone. Thank you to Aquinnah police officer Steve Mathias for also stopping by to check on me, as my family had left for New York that morning and were concerned as I was alone. It has been a nice respite to see the sun for the past few days despite the intense chill in the air.

We can be grateful for the clearing of the roadways and the trees along the State Road in Aquinnah. Paul Mattos of Bay State Construction Services and Mark Clements of Clements Tree Service have spent the past two months clearing the sides of the road back 10 feet and removing those trees that would have been a hazard during the storm. They started in Aquinnah and have worked their way down to South Road in Chilmark thus far. Their work certainly made the storm less treacherous along the roads from which they have cleared the overgrown brush, as well as the diseased and weakened trees.

Miki Badnek would like to remind everyone that the West Tisbury Congregational Church community suppers will begin on Wednesday, Jan. 5 at 5:30 p.m. The suppers will be held every Wednesday evening through March 30, weather permitting. Side dishes will be gratefully accepted but are not required.

Lisa Bibko-Vanderhoop is rather excited these days. Her 2011 Vineyard Seadogs calendar was chosen as one of the top ten pet calendars by PeoplePets.com. The calendar in fact superseded Betty White’s pet calendar and even that of some of the most popular pet calendars. Great work, Lisa. On the cover of Lisa’s 2011 calendar is Enzo, the bilingual Italian sheepdog from Montreal — fluent to commands in English and in French.

Nina Butler, daughter of Lenny and Mallory Butler, is home for her winter break from her senior year studies at Wellesley College.

Aquinnah fire chief Walter Delaney arrived home this week following his two-week hospitalization in Boston for surgery. He is presently resting comfortably at home.

Condolences to the family and friends of Eleanor Pearlson of Tea Lane Real Estate. She was a friend to many over the years and will be missed by all, especially her devoted extended family.

Anne Vanderhoop Madison heard “Wii wish you a Merry Christmas” from her family. The Vanderhoop family and friends all gathered at Anne’s and enjoyed the annual open house celebration at her home. They will follow her progress with all the Wii games. When they last checked, she was big bass fishing in her living room.

Margaret Maida has been enjoying a 10-day visit from her son, Charles Maida Jr., and his daughter, Chelsea. They are visiting from their home in Citra, Fla., for the holidays. Of course, this was young Chelsea’s first experience with seeing snow, especially in time for Christmas.

Theresa Manning enjoyed spending her first birthday celebration in their new home with family and friends. As always, the weather did not cooperate but a grand time was had by all who attended. Great food, great fellowship and great friends.

Our thoughts and prayers to Dr. Deeb Salem and his family in the loss of their home at Deep Bottom on Christmas night due to fire. It seems like just yesterday they were so excited about building their new home and I anticipate they will be just as eager to rebuild.

Naushon Vanderhoop returned to her home in Brooklyn after spending the holiday with her family. On Sunday evening Naushon celebrated her birthday at the home of her brother, Woody, and his wife, Jamie, for a night of karaoke and a fun time for all.

Woody and Jamie Vanderhoop returned home on Friday after attending the Spears family celebration on Dec. 22 in Rhode Island.

Luc Woodard is home with his family for the holidays from his freshman year studies at St. George’s School in Newport.

Happy New Year to one and all with great wishes for a year of good health, prosperity and peace. Have a safe weekend as you welcome in the new year. Safe journeys for all those traveling near and far.

Happy 50th anniversary wishes to Edson Rogers and his bride, Norma, as they celebrated their special day on Dec. 26.

Happy birthday wishes to our former East Chop neighbor, Donald Andrew, who celebrated a major milestone on Dec. 30.

Belated happy birthday wishes to Dorothy (Wight) Barker, who celebrated her 100th birthday on Dec. 5 with her daughters, Karen Duffy and Judith Lutender. Her secret to longevity is most likely due to her ancestry that goes back generations as a descendant of the Mayhew and Norton families.

Happy birthday wishes this week to Barbara Flynn, Gary Haley and Karen Truchon-Altieri, who will all celebrate their birthday on New Year’s Day.

My favorite cardiologist, Dr. Timothy E. Guiney, will observe his special day on Jan. 2. Donald Widdiss will also party that day.
