A 26-year-old Edgartown woman was airlifted to Massachusetts General Hospital on Monday afternoon following an unusual single-car crash on the Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road across from the regional high school.

Oak Bluffs police said Kaylan Gray was traveling toward Vineyard Haven in a 2004 Chevrolet Cobalt when she apparently attempted to pass several cars on the right hand shoulder of the road, taking out both a speed limit sign and a 20 mph flashing school zone sign before coming to rest against a tree at the entrance to Martha’s Vineyard Community Services. A pickup truck exiting Community Services at the time was grazed but the driver was uninjured, police said.

The accident occurred just after 1 p.m. A Medflight helicopter landed at the high school parking lot to transport the driver, who police said sustained serious injuries in the crash. A Jaws of Life tool was used to cut open the car before the driver could be treated. Oak Bluffs Lieut. Timothy Williamson said witness accounts put the speed of the car at 40 to 50 miles per hour at the time of the crash; he said the accident remains under investigation, although police believe no drugs or alcohol were involved. The Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road was closed for and hour and a half and traffic diverted while police and emergency responders worked at the scene.
