Chilmark is enduring yet another winter storm as I write. Whiteout conditions midday Wednesday and then sunshine with dry skies. It was a mixed bag of weather but nothing to match what our off-Island friends across New England had to deal with.

Regrets to Zee Gamson whose name I consistently spelled wrong last week. Just a misguided typo! Sad to say that even with all the hi-tech appliances, we still have to rely on our typing skills.

Word has reached us of the death of Evie Norton, who lived and worked in Chilmark for many years before moving back to her early home in the British Isles. Evie was wife and then widow of Cyril Norton, a well respected Chilmarker. She came to Chilmark in the late 1960’s with a summer family. She and Cyril met and married that year and Evie continued her life in Chilmark. She was a social and friendly person who made many friends while here. At one time she worked in the Chilmark Library. She eventually returned to England and lived another 10 years there. She died last week at the age of 89. Many of us remember her and are happy she had so many years and shared some of them with Chilmark.

The Chilmark Church suppers will be offering light supper fare along with the soups. Each week will offer a different cook’s contribution. Side dishes and desserts are always welcome. The public is invited and the starting time is 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays at the church.

The Martha’s Vineyard Garden Club will meet on Tuesday, Jan. 18, at the Wakeman Center for their first meeting of the new year. The meeting will begin at 1 p.m. Please call 508-693-5334 for details.

Molly Glasgow of Grey Barn Farm on South Road has written an essay on Island weather that is in the current issue of Martha’s Vineyard Magazine.

Unfortunately, the Chowder and a Movie program scheduled for Jan. 12 at the Chilmark Library had to be cancelled because of the bad weather. However, the next scheduled Chowder and a Movie day is Jan. 26 at noon at the library. The Friday Family Movie scheduled for Jan. 21 at the library will be Philadelphia Story beginning at 7 p.m. All are welcome.

Tonight, Friday, Jan. 14, is the January Teen Night at the Chilmark Library. The film is Scott Pilgrim Saves the World and pizza is the food so it promises to be a fun night for the teen crowd. All are welcome.

We send condolences to the family and many friends of Barbara Stix Lipke, who died on Jan. 3. She had been a seasonal resident of Chilmark all her life. Her family lived at Windy Gates and she continued to spend her summers there with her family. In recent years she became interested in storytelling and worked for several organizations advancing the art of storytelling. She shared her talent with the Chilmark Library and other groups on the Island. Many of us will miss her annual Chilmark time and her lively personality and many interests. The family will hold a memorial celebration of Barbara’s life this summer.

We are fast approaching what the oldtimers called the dead of winter. For me that means a time of no news! Please call or e-mail me with whatever news is happening that the rest of us would enjoy hearing about. That’s pretty much anything at this time of year!
