The Edgartown selectmen voted this week to allow the Atlantic restaurant to change its liquor license from annual to seasonal. The Atlantic is now closed until April.

“If the economy improves they’d love to be back to an annual [license],” restaurant spokesman Sean Murphy said at the selectmen’s weekly meeting on Monday. “The numbers just aren’t there to operate an annual license.” The restaurant has been open year-round for the past two years.

During a public hearing on the proposed change, Harborside Inn assistant manager Jack Klumick voiced concern about amplified entertainment disturbing guests at his neighboring inn in the summer months; the selectmen have allowed the Atlantic to keep its windows open at night. But selectman and board chairman Margaret Serpa said that issue is more properly addressed when the board holds a hearing for the restaurant’s entertainment license.

In other restaurant business, selectmen issued a warning to the owners of Il Tesoro at the Charlotte Inn for closing without permission for the second year in a row. The restaurant has been closed since Jan. 1; in order to keep its annual liquor license it must reopen by Feb. 1.

“This is their last warning; if they do it again next year we need to take further action,” Mrs. Serpa said. “We’ve been very lenient.”

A letter will be sent to the restaurant owners. “You might mention some of the penalties up to and including closures in the summertime, and it can have significant impact on their business if they don’t comply with the regulations,” said selectman Arthur Smadbeck.

Finally, after weeks and months of wrangling, disagreement and soul-searching debate, the selectmen signed a state grant application for the town library reconstruction project. The application was due to be delivered to the state board of library commissioners by yesterday at the latest by project manager Rick Pomroy.

The total cost of the building project is now pegged at $10.4 million; the town is eligible to receive up to $5.2 million if the grant is approved.

The awards will be announced by the state in June.
