KATHIE CASE

I have been gone for a month and so far we have had rain, snow, sleet, ice, wind and temperatures from 13 degrees to almost 45 last week. As I have said so many times, welcome to New England.
Happy birthday to all who have celebrated their day these past weeks. Big balloons go out to Meghan Delphous and Maisie Sherman, who celebrated their day Feb. 1; Elizabeth Hayman, Feb. 3; Paige Fiske and Robert Olcott, Feb. 4; Kazara Aldeborgh and Aiden Rogers, Feb. 6; Camden Townes, Feb. 8; and to Amanda Moraes and Maksim Pachico, who celebrate their day today, Feb. 11.
Special birthday wishes go out to Heidi Boyd, who celebrated on Feb. 3, and Yvette Turner, who celebrated Feb. 4.
There are a lot of people heading south to find the heat. I talked to a friend in Edgewater who said it was 70 degrees and she was wearing capris and a long-sleeved shirt on the beach but she saw lots of northerners in the water. It was too cold for all the Floridians to be in the water, she said.
Linley Dolby and husband, David Weagle, traveled with Melanie Rankow Prescott and her husband, Nick, to St. John for their warm vacation. They kept teasing on Facebook about how cold their beer was or that the frozen daiquiris were a big welcome on such a warm day.
The Martha’s Vineyard Museum has begun selling raffle tickets for its first ever Evening of Discovery raffle. Prizes include a new car, a trip to southern France and an American Express gift card! They will sell 500 tickets at $100 each for the chance to win three great prizes: a new 2011 Hyundai Accent, a week trip to Arles, France, in a newly renovated apartment with airfare provided, and a $1,000 American Express gift card. The drawing will occur at the museum’s 13th annual Evening of Discovery, July 14. Winners need not be present to win. To purchase tickets, visit the museum at 59 School street, Edgartown or the Granary Gallery, 636 Old County Road, West Tisbury, or call 508-647-4441.
This weekend the Old Whaling Church will host two very special performances of The True Story of Cinderella, with director Garrett Brown at the piano. It is not a play, per se, it is more a voice recital with some stunning Vineyard voices. And it’s funny! Performances are Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Admission is a bargain $10 plus a nonperishable item for the Island Food Pantry.
The Not Summer issue of Martha’s Vineyard Magazine is on stands now, with our Edgartown neighbors past and present filling the pages. The magazine follows Donna Diaz, Debbie Brewer and Mary Edwards of Edgartown, along with three other friends, as they circumnavigate the Island on foot, walking the 63-mile perimeter in about 40 hours over six days. Judy Klumick of Morning Glory Farm spends winters in her Ocean Heights home developing recipes for the farm’s kitchen, and writer Jim Miller offers suggestions on where to find a crowd in February, including trivia night at the Wharf Pub.
On a personal note, I would like to thank all of my friends, relatives and readers for their cards, meals and lending hands during the last month. My new knee is doing great, and I hope to be out and walking soon. This is a very special community. Receiving cards from my off-Island readers was a great surprise and a welcome one and again I say thank you.
Have a great week, and keep the home candles burning.
