Chilmark is enjoying the longer days, especially when they are sunny and even better when they are warm!

There was a lot of activity in Menemsha this week as work began on the rebuilding of the fill dock. There was another crane working on a private job in the harbor. It was a great week to be a sidewalk superintendent.

The Coast Guard investigation into the cause of the July fire has been completed and the results are in this paper. Most of us have long since stopped worrying about how and are eager to get on with rebuilding. Let’s just take every precaution to prevent such a fire happening again.

Congratulations to all my hard-working friends at the Vineyard Gazette for winning 17 awards. I am proud to be associated with all those talented and dedicated folks. Cheers to you all!

This weekend is the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School’s winter play, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and this year we have two Chilmark students with roles, Thorpe Karabees and Bradley Carroll. Kate Poole Murray is the director of these traditionally successful plays and we wish them all repeated success. The performances are Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings beginning at 7 p.m. and a Saturday matinee at 1 p.m.

We send get well wishes this week to Phyllis Conway who is in the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital as I write. Her many Chilmark friends all hope she will be home soon.

Cathy Thompson is home and back at work as the Aquinnah librarian after enjoying a tropical island vacation.

Donald Nitchie, Chilmark poet, and Barbara Peckham, will read from their poetry at the West Tisbury library on Feb. 26 at 4 p.m. The public is invited. Donald and his wife, Beth, are recently back from a sunny vacation in Puerto Rico.

Marguerite Benson has been in town several times this winter, overseeing some work being done on her Menemsha home.

The Friday night movie at the Chilmark library on Feb. 18 will be I Know Where I’m Going. The next Chowder and a Movie afternoon will be Feb. 23, A Room With a View, shown at noon.

The computer workshops continue at the Chilmark library at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. On Feb. 23 B.Z. Riger will instruct us on how to use Facebook for our small businesses; Facebook for Entrepreneurs is the title of the workshop. There will be three more, entitled Blogging for Beginners, YouTube and Digital Photos. The classes are open to the public free of charge.

Congratulations to the busy parents of the Chilmark School PTO who hosted the successful Caribbean night dance party at the Community Center last weekend and raised lots of money for the students of the school. As they say, a good time was had by all!

Conrad and Jane Neumann are in town from their winter home in Durham, N.C., for a midwinter visit to family and friends. They report that the daffodils in Durham are about to bloom.

If you are running for office or up for re-election on any town job, it is time to get your papers from the town clerk and collect signatures. The completed forms are due back in town hall on March 7.
