First I must apologize for not having a column last week. I must remember when I send the draft to the office I have to hit the send key. Oh well, let’s see if I do better this week.

I know the temperature has been up and down this past week but the thing that makes it more bearable is the sun being out every day and lifting the spirits.

Spring is in the air and I have purple crocuses blooming in the front garden. Jan Norton reports that red-winged blackbirds were singing their spring songs the other morning. And it is now official: the Dairy Queen will open on March 15.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Sophia Decker, and John Habekost, who celebrated on Feb. 12; Kayleigh Gales, Luke McCracken and Amadine Muniz on Feb. 13; Devin Hill and Kevin Montambault on Feb. 15; Jackson Pachico on Feb. 16; Caroline Moffet on Feb. 17; Kaitlyn Freeman and Ana Kurelia on Feb. 18; Ennis Foster on Feb. 19, Kimberly De Araujo on Feb. 20; Tristan Blair and Dorian Johnson on Feb. 20. Kenneth Hammond and Katherine Wallace celebrate their day today, Feb. 25.

Special wishes go out to Jonathan Polleys, who celebrated his day Feb. 23.

Belated birthday wishes to Dick Enos, who celebrated on Feb. 7.

Special anniversary wishes to Donna and Coo Cavallo, who celebrated their 25th anniversary on Feb. 14.

Our sympathies go out to the Look family for the loss of their husband, father and grandfather. Chris (Huck) Look, the former longtime sheriff, died on Feb. 22. He was a man around town but I think my favorite memories of him are the lawn wars Ralph and he had every summer. He was a good neighbor and will be surely missed.

My fun for the last month has been watching my neighbor’s driveway to see whose car is here and whose is not. Zack Waller, who is a student at Cornell University, has been home for winter break; next semester he will go to Germany to study. He leaves at the end of the month and does not return home until July. During his break he has been traveling back and forth to Cornell and Boston College to see hockey games, and it has been funny because one weekend he would take his truck and then the next time his mom’s van, depending on how many friends went on the adventure with him. We wish Zach a good semester overseas.

Texas met Edgartown two weeks ago as new neighbors Scott and Danielle Pendergraft hosted two back-to-back Texas-themed parties for nearly 100 friends old and new. After enjoying the Island seasonally for many years, the Pendergrafts, including their children Jake, age 10, Marjorie, age seven and Madison, age two, recently relocated from the Lone Star State. Danielle manages a public relations and event planning firm and Scott works in the financial industry.

It was nice to see Walter Morrison out and about. He has had quite a winter after being in the hospital for awhile here and then in Boston. True to his nature, he battled back and now looks great and is back to normal.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
