KATHIE CASE

I guess we could say that the weather isn’t boring. We are either expecting rain, snow or sunshine but the wind has been the biggest subject. I think there were more boats canceled these past few weeks than this winter during any storm.
Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Ryan Noia, who celebrated his day March 5; Joseph Pinto, March 6; William Bruguiere and Kya Maloney on March 8; and to Ava Thors, who celebrates her day today, March 11.
Special wishes go out to Gail Avakian, who celebrated a milestone birthday on March 6. For those who follow Facebook, you would know that Gail and husband, Bob, were at Mardi Gras and dressed appropriately for the occasion.
Holly Mercier reports that she has some of her little irises blooming in her yard. The crocuses around town are really popping. The spring plants and herbs are arriving at the nursery. A reminder to those gardeners out there, or anyone who wants to try some on their own: Plant your peas on St. Patrick’s Day so you can have a crop by Memorial Day.
If you have not heard, Depot Corner is now letting customers cash in on the gasoline discount credits from the Stop & Shop. It has been so overdue! We thank Lois for getting the set-up for Islanders, especially now that the gas prices are soaring. I have only used it once but I saved 20 cents a gallon. Just ask at the register for help, as the pumps only take the new Stop & Shop cards. Like anything new, it will take a little tweaking to get it all together.
The Martha’s Vineyard Center for Living will sponsor their third cultural luncheon on Saturday, March 12 from noon to 2 p.m. at The Grill on Main in Edgartown. Kerry Alley will be the keynote speaker on the influence and contributions of the Portuguese community on Martha’s Vineyard. Tickets are $25 and may be purchased by calling director Leslie Clapp at 508-939-9440.
Edgartown fourth grader Jake Pendergraft will travel to his former home of Houston, Texas this weekend to present $7,000 of the proceeds raised last November with NFL alumni from around the league during Birthday Bowl X. Birthday Bowl X began when the ten-year-old boy wanted to celebrate his birthday by simply playing a little football with his friends. Jake decided he did not need birthday presents, but a lot of other kids needed people to share their blessings with them. So instead of birthday gifts, Jake’s friends made a charitable donation to Caring for Kids, the NFL Alumni Houston’s charitable mission, as their ticket to play a football game alongside football legends such as Hall of Famer Kenny Houston, Ray Childress, David Carter, Charlie Davis, Bill Stephanos, Robert Woods, Stephen Wiggins, Mike Quinn and Kenneth Hall.
The $7,000 will benefit the flag football program for underprivileged kids in Houston’s third ward. The remaining Birthday Bowl X proceeds (around $3,000) have been designated toward other NFL charitable endeavors benefiting youth, including their Charity Golf Classic. Well done, Jake!
The Edgartown School will host their fifth annual Silent and Live Auction to benefit the eighth grade trip to Washington, D.C., Friday, March 11, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Boathouse (above Atlantic Restaurant, overlooking Edgartown Harbor). The many great auction items include a Dairy Queen party, a school slumber party, an open gym party, a karaoke party, a pool party, gift certificates, jewelry, art, landscaping services and a signed Bruins jersey.
On Wednesday, March 23 the public is invited to an Edgartown candidates forum at 7 p.m. at the Whaling Church, Baylies room, sponsored by the League of Women Voters. The forum will offer an opportunity to hear statements from those running for office and to ask questions. Be sure to attend and bring your friends.
American Cancer Society daffodils will be arriving March 15. Presales will be delivered. Additional daffodils can be purchased at two locations March 16: Dorothy Bangs will be outside Cronig’s selling and outside the hospital cafeteria will be Jaque Renear, from 10 a.m. until the flowers are sold out.
Just a reminder that there will be visiting hours for Sheriff Huck Look on Monday, March 14, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Chapman, Cole and Gleason. The memorial service will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Whaling Church on Main street in Edgartown.
Don’t forget to put your clocks ahead on Saturday. We will lose an hour of sleep, but it will be light until 7 p.m. now.
Have a great week, and keep the home candles burning.
