Oak Bluffs
Oak Bluffs voters will have a crowded field to choose from next month as six town residents are running for two open spots on the board of selectmen.
Board of selectmen chairman Duncan Ross and selectman Ron DiOrio are up for reelection this year, but to hold on to their seats they must defeat a field of candidates that includes Lookout Tavern and Seasons Pub owner Michael Santoro, Island Affordable Housing Fund board member Walter Vail, former selectman and director of the council on aging Roger Wey and former New York city health administrator Abraham Seiman, who is also running for a seat on the finance committee. Selectmen serve three-year terms.
In other contested races Oak Bluffs Inn owner Erik Albert will run for reelection to the planning board against challenger Kris W. Chvatal, who is currently the chairman of the zoning board of appeals.
Four candidates will vie for three spots on the finance and advisory committee, including Mr. Seiman, wastewater commissioner Joe Alosso, commercial fisherman William Alwardt and Oak Bluffs resident Maura McGroarty.
Selectman Gail Barmakian will run for reelection to the wastewater commission against business owner Mark Wallace.
Jesse Law 3rd will run unopposed for town moderator after David Richardson announced he would step down this spring.

Edgartown
Seats on the library board of trustees and financial advisory committee will be determined when Edgartown voters go to the polls on Thursday April 14.
Julie Lively is running against incumbent Ellen Kaplan for a one-year term on the board, and Deanna Ahearn Laird and Robert Avakian are vying with current board members Patricia Rose and Ann Tyra for positions. Only two of the four can be elected for the three-year term.
The library trustees faced scrutiny in the past few months when the fate of the new Edgartown Public Library project rested in their hands. The trustees, selectmen and library building design committee had a series of heated conversations over the new site at the old Edgartown School; the trustees waited just days before the grant was due to pledge their support.
All three boards have been working together for the past month to build town consensus around the new project, slated for a vote at the annual town meeting.
For the financial committee, West Tisbury School interim principal Donna Lowell-Bettencourt is seeking reelection for a three-year term but faces opposition from Leslie Baynes and Bruce Stone. There are only two positions available on the board.
Lastly, selectman and board chairman Margaret Serpa is running unopposed for reelection for a three-year term.
Nomination papers had to be filed by Wednesday for the coming election.

Board of health incumbent Herbert F. Custer, who has served for 12 years, is not running for reelection. “Let some one younger do it. It is good for the town to have some new blood,” Mr. Custer said yesterday. He also served for 19 years on the planning board.
Dr. Bruce A. Stelle is running unopposed for Mr. Custer’s seat on the health board.
There is a vacancy left by Nan Carter who resigned as a library trustee, leaving one year of a three-year term. There are no candidates for her position.
Arthur D. Smith is running unopposed for a three-year term as library trustee, filling a hole left by Heather Quinn, the incumbent who is not running for reelection.
Election day is Tuesday, April 26. The deadline for withdrawing as a candidate is March 24.
