Please Adopt Us

The Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard has a few animals who need good homes.

Spring is almost here and we certainly are overdue for some warm weather, but unfortunately with spring comes kittens that everyone tries to find homes for, and a lot of them wind up at the animal shelter. While we all really love the kittens that come to us for adoption, we would like to strongly urge that all cat owners: please have your cats spayed or neutered so we can proudly say that the Island has done its part in controlling the cat population.

We have only three beautiful cats left looking for their forever homes: Binx, the sweet black cat with the long white whiskers who has been at the shelter much too long; Phoebe, the ginger-and-white cat who gets along very well with all the other cats and should be an indoor cat only, and Maxine, the gentle tabby with the sweet disposition.

Our other animals looking for new homes are Bella, the boxer cross who has really become the mascot at the shelter. She loves everybody — cats, dogs and people. Won’t you come and see her for yourself? She is a medium-sized dog with a beautiful fawn coat, which is easy to take care of. A wonderful short-haired bunny named Cucumber would make a great Easter present for a child, as would our sweet little female guinea pig named Grace.

Speaking of Easter, a really talented artist named John Aldeborgh has offered his talent to the shelter and will do a beautiful charcoal portrait of your dog for a $100 donation. What a great Easter present that would make! He will do the portrait from a picture, so you don’t have to worry about getting your dog to sit for him. Please call the Shelter at 508-627-8662 for details, or drop by to see a selection of Mr. Aldeborgh’s great portraits.

Shelter hours are Wednesdays 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

It is rabies clinic time again. This year it will be held on April 2 from 10 a.m. to noon at two locations on the Island: The animal shelter in Edgartown and the West Tisbury fire station. The cost is $15 per animal. Please call the shelter if you have any questions.

Volunteers are needed and contributions are always gratefully accepted; we are funded solely by donations. The Susie Fund was established to pay the medical expenses of animals at the shelter who need medical care. Please make checks out to the Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard; the mailing address is P.O. Box 190, Edgartown MA 02539.
