This is the big centennial year for the Martha’s Vineyard Rod and Gun Club. While the club members haven’t yet figured out how to celebrate, they’ve taken one first step to capitalize on the milestone: They’ve come out with 100 special, limited edition, numbered hats.

Robert C. De Lisle, president of the club, said the idea arose out of a need to put money toward the organization’s newly renovated clubhouse, overlooking Sengekontacket Pond. It has been over a year since the facility was completed. “We were looking for ways to put money toward the mortgage,” he said.

So they came up with numbered hats. It is a one-of-a-kind commemorative hat. “It is a souvenir,” Mr. De Lisle said. Even at the price of $100 a piece, they’ve been selling quickly. They’ve sold 25 so far.

Construction of the new $260,000 clubhouse was started in 2008 and completed in the fall of 2009. A considerable amount of service, materials and labor was donated but the facility remains a financial burden. “We just thought selling the hats would help out,” Mr. De Lisle said.

There is plenty more to do this year to commemorate the organization’s 100th birthday. Mr. De Lisle said there is a talk of a summertime cookout. The club has 468 members, and in recent years the organizers have recast the role of the organization to a club for outdoorsmen, not limited just to fishermen and hunters.

The look of the hats will be familiar to a lot of Vineyarders. The numbering and special embroidery was done by Robert E. and Ernestine Kinnecom of Oak Bluffs. They run a sewing embroidery business in Oak Bluffs called Island Design. Each hat has gold lettering commemorating the birthday and the special number.

“We really liked their work,” Mr. De Lisle said.

“Plus, he gave us a few dollars off on each hat,” he said.

Mr. Kinnecom said it was a bit of a struggle getting the computer driven sewing machines to do it perfectly at first. “The machines didn’t want do go right,” he said. Still, they only had five mistakes out of the whole group.
