The Aquinnah Public Library board of trustees would like to invite you to a retirement party for Natalie Francis on Thursday, March 31 from 2 to 7 p.m. at the library. There will be a ceremony to honor Natalie at 5 p.m. Natalie will be retiring after almost 15 years as a library assistant and the Aquinnah community is very proud of her accomplishments, her devotion and especially all of her hard work. She will be greatly missed at the library. Cake and other refreshments will be served.

The Martha’s Vineyard Film Society is collaborating with the Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Society with a potluck dinner and movie on Saturday, March 26 at 6 p.m. Please bring a dish to share that will serve six people. Please bring your own plate and utensils as well. Dinner is at 6 p.m. followed by the movie Queen of the Sun, which is an amazing story of the honeybee crisis. The movie features Aquinnah summer resident Michael Pollan. Tickets are $8 for nonmembers of the film society and $5 for film society members.

Eloise Moreis Boales is recuperating from her recent stay at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. She is up and about and keeping up with her husband, James, once more.

Condolences to the family and friends of Jo-Ann Ewing who passed away this week at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Jo-Ann and I worked together with many patients over the years. She was very considerate in her reuniting her Fairhaven schoolmates with their Aquinnah heritage.

Congratulations to Evan Hall, a senior at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School, upon his acceptance at Berklee School of Music, where he will study music composition. Evan is the son of Norman Hall of Vineyard Haven and Saskia Vanderhoop of Aquinnah. He has been an expert hip-hop dancer, performing in Manhattan and across the Vineyard, as well as conducting his own classes in hip-hop. For now, he is learning guitar as well.

Condolences to the family and friends of Therese Hall, who passed away at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. She had a wonderful sense of humor and will be missed by all following her long illness.

Condolences to the family and friends of Mrs. Ann Lynch, who passed away recently in Watertown. I will miss her conversations. The Lynch family were longtime residents of Lobsterville Road in a quaint little home built by her late husband, Kevin Lynch.

Shaun MacPhail, his wife, Alexandra Taylor, and their twin daughters, Olive and Violet, recently returned home from their annual visit with grandparents, Captain Hugh and Jeanne Taylor, at their home in the Caribbean. They all had a great time as always.

Congratulations to Emerson Mahoney, son of Juli Vanderhoop and Michael Mahoney, and his Vineyard Bantam A Team hockey players in their state championship win over the weekend. They played five games over the weekend with no losses and were undefeated. The opposing teams only had a total of five goals over the course of the weekend. Two weeks ago their team won the championship at Lake Placid, N.Y. Next will be their home playoff games. The Vineyard Bantam A Team is under the coaching of Greg Carroll, Mike Jackson, and Nick Vukota. Congratulations to all.

Robert Manning returned home this weekend after attending the 100th birthday celebration for his grandfather, James Heine, in White Plains, N.Y. Mr. Heine was honored by his family and friends on his special day.

Allen and Suzanne Rugg of East Pasture and Wellesley were here over the weekend especially to attend the 11th annual Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival at the Chilmark Community Center on Sunday afternoon. They were here specifically to view We Still Live Here, the documentary film by director Anne Makepeace about the reclamation of the language of the Wampanoag Tribe.

Thank you to Thomas Bena and the Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival for including a film on American Indians each year in the festival.

Congratulations to Ciara Seccombe on her fifth place standing in the annual spelling bee one week ago. Following her recent holiday in California and with family and friends in Australia, I am sure she will be ready for another spelling bee soon. Her travels included her parents, Lauren Martin and Michael Seccombe, and her younger brother, James.

Durwood and Jamie Sue Vanderhoop returned home on Tuesday evening after spending a long weekend in Denver, Colo., while attending the 37th annual Denver March Powwow. In previous years, Woody has performed at the powwow with his drum. Two weeks ago, Woody and Jamie were in Double Oak, Texas near Dallas. They attended the performance of The Music Man in which Jamie’s nephew, Kyle Olsen, performed as the lead, Professor Harold Hill, for his middle school class play, which had a cast of 50 members.

Happy 29th anniversary wishes to Michael and Carol Mayrand as they celebrate their special day on March 26.

Happy birthday wishes this week to Dennis Gonsalves and Beverly Wright, who celebrated on March 24 — thank you for the reminder, Eleanor Hebert.

Hal Child also celebrated on the 24th.

A very special Happy Birthday wish to Rosalie Bassett, matriarch of the extensive Bassett family across the Vineyard from Aquinnah to Edgartown, who will celebrate her special day today. Patty Lincoln will celebrate her special day today as well. March 26 will be celebrated by Anita Vanderhoop Keegan, Mason Jeffers, Michael Marshall, Shirley Tankard Robinson, Michael T. Carroll, Russell Swartz, Nancy Colter Abbott and Harold Zadeh. Jeffie Butler, Brenda Smith and Lynne Silva will all party on March 27, as will Jackie Flynn Morgan who is preparing to open the Bite for the season. Aquinnah moderator Michael Hebert will party on March 28. Jannette Vanderhoop will party on March 29 as will Ed Fantasia.

The Aquinnah police chief will celebrate a major milestone on March 30. Also celebrating on the 30th will be James Glavin, Heidi Vanderhoop, Dan Maltais and Justin Vanderhoop.

March 31 is Durkee Day around the Vineyard Gazette office, as Steve Durkee observes his special day. Michael Dolby will also party on March 31 and shares the day with Patt Burgess and Edwin D. Vanderhoop.

Last but certainly not least, a very special birthday wish to a few of my Martha’s Vineyard Hospital nursery mates — Faith West, Douglas Asselin, Rita Harrington and Peter Vincent, who will all be observing their special days this week as we all look forward to next year!
