The Oak Bluffs clay brick bathhouse withstood the hurricane of 1938 and after its new facelift it should be ready to withstand a few more.
In October voters agreed to spend $200,000 of Community Preservation Act money on the $490,000 project to restore what parks commissioner chairman Nancy Phillips called its “deplorable condition.” The formerly dingy digs will be replaced with new women’s and men’s rooms along with a family bathroom. The property is also being regraded and made handicap accessible.
Right now passersby can peer straight through the shell of the new bathhouse to Nantucket Sound and work on the structure is contracted to be completed within a window that extends until June 28. With the Steamship Authority resuming its service at the beginning of the summer on May 24, it’s a date that frightens selectman Gail Barmakian.
“It’s a little concerning for me,” she said at Tuesday’s selectmen’s meeting.
“The contractor is great, he wants to get in there and get the job complete,” said town administrator Michael Dutton. “He is fully aware of when the Steamship starts.”
