Nonna gets to be Nonna again. There’s a new star shining in our neighborhood back in my Old Country. Nonna’s friends and neighbors, Arun Singh and Rachel Schoolcraft, are pleased to announce the birth of their daughter, Olivia Lee Singh, on Friday, March 25 at 6:01 p.m. Olivia weighed in at 6 pounds, one ounce and is 18.25 inches long. Congratulations, and may she live happily ever after!
Karen Coffey and Dan Koch are proud to announce that their son, Daniel D. Koch, has made the dean’s list for the winter quarter at the New England Institute of Technology. Way to go, Dan!

Our Martha’s Vineyard Film Society presents Academy Award-nominated Biutiful with, be still my heart, Javier Bardem, tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. at the Katharine Cornell Theatre.
Our American Legion will hold its first Sunday of the month breakfast on April 3 from 8 to 10 a.m. at the legion hall on Martin Road. Grownups eat for $7, kids under 12 chow down for $3. I’ll see you there.
You don’t have to cook at all on Sunday. After you rest up from the legion breakfast, head over to Grace Church from noon to 2 p.m. for the last session of the off-season lobster rolls. For large orders call ahead at 508-693-0332.
The Vineyard Haven Public Library’s children’s programs continue on Tuesday, April 5, with songs by Jeremy Berlin. Infants to two-year-olds are entertained at 10 a.m., the three-to-five set has fun at 11 a.m. Please note there is no chess club Tuesday night for the next two weeks. The library is closing early on April 5 and April 12 so that we can all attend town meeting. Board games with Katherine will be held at the library at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, for ages five and up.
The library is thrilled to have Cooking with Bella, my friend from Minas Gerais, on Thursday, April 7, at 5:30 p.m. Bella will be demonstrating some of her favorite Brazilian recipes. Here’s a chance for you to find out what you have been missing at all those wonderful parties I attend.
Our Martha’s Vineyard Women’s Network hosts a seminar on the power of e-mail in marketing your business at our high school on Tuesday, April 5, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Preregistration costs $15, the at-the-door the price is $25. Register today online at mvwomensnetwork.org. The network is also offering a small business grant for $2,500 to improve economic development on Island. You must apply by April 8.
I’m giving you at least a week’s notice to sign up for the fourth in the cultural luncheon series presented by the Martha’s Vineyard Center4Living. The luncheon will be held on Saturday, April 9, at the Grill on upper Main street in Edgartown. Next weekend’s theme is the Jewish community of Martha’s Vineyard and a review of their many contributions here. Ruth Cronig Stiller and her daughter, Gayle Stiller, will be the featured speakers. It has been a very sad few weeks. I received news that Betty Burton’s wonderful mother, Jo Burton, died on March 22. I had the pleasure of meeting this most beautiful woman a few years back on one of her visits to the Island. Jo had a walk-on part in A League of Their Own so we will always have a chance to see her. Our condolences to Betty and her family.
Sympathy also goes out to the Hall family on the death of Therese. I have known Therese for many years and always enjoyed her sense of humor, love of life, devotion to family and to her faith. She will be greatly missed in the community.
And what isn’t there to say about Hugh Schwarz, who died last Friday? Hugh was one of a kind, and one of the last great gentlemen. He was a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather with an interest in every aspect of life you could think of — reading and boating particularly come to mind. He was unpretentious, humble and always polite. Our condolences to his family and friends.
The birthday bandwagon pulls along Enoia Preia Dos Rei today. Tomorrow is a party for Kate Desrosiers, Bob Kalayan, Bo Andrews and Kathy Daly. April 3 honors Jim Reynolds, Denis Rogers, and Chrissie and Charley McCarthy. April 4 is for Amber Willoughby, Sue Rice and Tine Sonderby. April 5 belongs to Gary Mayrand, Kinsman Mayrand, Tripta Bahal, Dan Fleming, John Valley and Julian David Burghoff. And on April 6, Kelsey Forend-Healy, Kathryn Lang, Ken Vanderlaske and Nancy Shemeth take the cake. Many happy returns.
