I hope someone lets Mother Nature know that it is now spring and the wind should not be blowing so hard and the weather should be warmer. I don’t know who has that authority, but the weather can’t do anything except get better.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Grant Pertile and Sarah Pertile, who celebrated their day May 1; Paige Anderson and Matthew Garcia, May 3; Cesar Bueno, May 6; Olivia Green-Lingren and Ian Shea, May 9; Gabriel Edmunds, May 11; Aubrey Ashmun, May 12; and to Summer Cardoza, who celebrates her day today, May 13.

Special birthday wishes go out to Connie Cowan, who celebrated her 80th birthday on April 29, and happy anniversary to Connie and her husband, George, as they celebrated their 60th anniversary on May 5. Congratulations to you both and here is to many more years together.

Congratulations to Donaroma’s, honored by the Massachusetts Clubhouse Coalition for providing valuable employment opportunities for members of the Daybreak Club. Michael Donaroma accepted the award proudly but was even more proud that Sumner Grover, who is part of the Daybreak Club and an employee of Donaroma’s for the past 29 years, was there. Congratulations to all.

Last Saturday there was a fundraiser for Kevin Searle at the P.A Club. It was a great night to help one of our own and once again it showed with all the people present. Barbara Magnuson and her hardworking committee gathered many donations for both the silent auction and live auction. The auctioneer was Ricky Mello and he got everything he could out of every bidder with his great sense of humor and charm. It was a great night and they raised over $10,000. Kevin was present and very overwhelmed by the generosity of every person there.

Today MassAudubon kicks off its 24-hour birdathon in which teams contend to spot the most species in the state. This is for birders of all abilities and ages, an opportunity to participate in friendly competition while raising funds for Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary here in Edgartown, and all of its programs.

The 24-hour competition starts at 6 p.m. today, Friday, May 13, and runs through 6 p.m. tomorrow. A children and family birding hour will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 14 at Felix Neck.

To join a team, make a donation, see a list of prizes, or get more information, contact Felix Neck at 508-627-4850.

The Edgartown Mothers Club is meeting on Tuesday, May 17, at Margaret Rankow’s home. It is the first meeting we have had in a long time and we’ll discuss new ways to keep the club going. If you were a past member and are interested in keeping this 75-year-old club active, please join us. Help us make our decision on the future of our club.

Have a great week, and keep the home candles burning.
