Rents will go up for leaseholders at the Cliffs in Aquinnah this summer.

At their meeting Tuesday, Aquinnah selectmen approved a four per cent rent hike for the cliff lease lots. This marks the first time in four years that the rents have been raised.

The town owns eight lots at the Cliffs and leases them to individual shopkeepers, mostly members of the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah). The shops include the Aquinnah Restaurant, Faith’s Seafood Shack, Stony Creek Gifts, Hatmarcha Gifts, Howwasswee Trading Post, On the Cliffs and Dream Catcher. Lease-holders paid $7.95 per square foot last year; with the increase this year they will pay $8.27 per square foot.

Selectmen pointed to increasing costs in town, notably for the town landfill.

Leaseholders agreed to come up with a plan to address problems with overflowing trash, suggesting that they may rent a dumpster to be located off site.
