Boys’ Tennis

The boys played a double header against EAC opponent Bishop Stang last Friday, making the most of a sunny afternoon. Time constraints forced the match to be played not in the standard best-of-three-sets format, but rather in an eight-game pro set. Despite the change in format, the Vineyarders made short work of the Spartans, winning every game.

In the second Stang match, sophomore Sterling Meacham played his first varsity set, deadlocking at 5-5 with opponent Jon Bedharz before winning the next three games for the victory. Sean McAndrew also took to the varsity courts for the first time, pairing with Ryan Sawyer at number two doubles for an 8-1 win.

Playing in the number two singles spot, sophomore Kent Leonard rattled off 32 consecutive points for an 8-0 win in what coach Ned Fennessey described as a “golden” pro set.

Seven players participated in last weekend’s MIAA Boys’ South Sectional Individual Tennis Tournament in Barnstable, with four Vineyarders moving past the initial round. Singles player Reid Yennie, seeded in a number one slot in division four, moved to the semifinals by defeating opponents from Dighton/Rehoboth and Plymouth North. Number two seed Kent Leonard also advanced, as did number-one-seeded doubles team Jackson McBride and Patrick McCarthy.

Girls’ Tennis

The girls took on league opponent Coyle & Cassidy last Thursday, winning 4-1 for their sixth EAC victory. The team is now 9-1 on the season and undefeated in EAC play.

At first singles, Annie Burton fell 4-6, 3-6. Dylan Brockmeyer, playing in the number two spot, fought her way to a 7-5 win in a long first set with opponent Kristen Carbone before taking a relatively easy 6-1 win in the next to seal the match.

Julia Cooper and Annabelle Hackney blanked C& C 6-0, 6-0 in the number one doubles slot, while Wendy Winn and Michaella Gaines won their match with 6-1, 6-1 scores.

On Friday, the team took on Bishop Stang for their second 4-1 league win of the week. Of particular note was Alyssa Adler’s 6-0, 6-0 win at third singles.

Four Vineyard players participated in the MIAA tournament this weekend. Annie Burton moved past the first round, defeating her Sandwich opponent 6-1, 6-0, but fell to Barnstable’s number one player, Kristen Donnelly, in the second round, 4-6, 3-6. Girls’ Lacrosse

Decisive wins over opponents Dartmouth and Bishop Feehan last week move the Vineyard girls to a 9-5 record (5-1 in the EAC). They will play their last home game of the season against rival Scituate today at 3 p.m.
