Please Adopt Us

Sadly it has happened again — someone left an animal in a cage wrapped in a trash bag near the dumpster at the Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard — probably in the middle of the night. Luckily the animal, an adorable and tiny Siberian dwarf hamster, was discovered by one of the staff at the vet clinic. We have named him Hamlet. He was left in a really nice cage — complete with a wheel and a tube for him to play in — so it appears that someone at some time cared a lot for this beguiling little critter. Why he was abandoned, we probably will never know but it was a cruel and thoughtless act. Please do not abandon animals on our doorstep — this time we were lucky to have found Hamlet, but it could have been otherwise. The shelter is happy to take in animals that must be given up for adoption for any reason; come during open hours (listed blow) and we will take your animal.

Meanwhile, the shelter has many beautiful kittens who are ready to find homes — two have really bonded with each other — a lovely orange tiger named Rusty and an all-black kitten named Amata. Our other kittens will be ready to be adopted soon. Please come and see them and get on our list; a small adoption fee will hold the kitten until it is ready to go to its new home.

The shelter also has great selection of adult cats. They are: Binx, a longtime resident; Maxine, a lovable tabby; Foxy Lady, another tabby; Faith, a really sweet black cat; Socks, an older black and white cat who will receive veterinary care from Dr. Breese for her lifetime; Chloe, a brindle and black short-haired cat; Rascal, a tabby who needs a special person to be his owner because he is rather shy and needs a lot of loving; and Fisher, another all-black, short-haired cat.

All cats are spayed or neutered and have had all their shots.

We still have one bunny named Boo who is black and white and is a dwarf rabbit — very sweet and loves to be held. And Grace the cute little guinea pig is still with us, waiting patiently for a new home. She was a stray that either got away from her home or was abandoned. Which brings us back to that reminder: Please do not abandon an animal — the shelter is here for adoption, no matter what the circumstances are.

Shelter hours are Wednesdays 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The shelter is closed Sunday through Tuesday. The telephone number is 508-627-8662.
