Unlawful dumping at the Edgartown fishermen’s depot led the Edgartown selectmen to approve new rules this week for the storage depot off Meshacket Road.

Selectmen will appoint someone to be in charge of the depot and will install some kind of security system around the area.

The problems were brought to the board’s attention by town harbor master Charlie Blair, who reported that garbage, unauthorized boats and deer carcasses had all been dumped on the property, formerly the site of the town landfill. About a dozen lots at the depot are leased to commercial fishermen and dockworkers for year-round storage of boats and gear. The leases are renewed annually. Mr. Blair said the depot is a big help to the fishermen.

“I just wanted [the selectmen] to know what a wonderful thing the fishermen’s depot is for many people in town,” Mr. Blair said.

The selectmen said they will ask the shellfish committee to recommend a person to supervise the area.

In other business at their meeting Monday, selectmen pressed for a private construction project on Simpson’s Lane to be wrapped up by this weekend after contractors were still on site past a May 20 deadline. The project involves rebuilding a foundation; Simpson’s Lane has been partially blocked, causing problems along the car route to the Chappaquiddick ferry.

“We gave them until the 20th, there shouldn’t be anybody blocking it now,” said town administrator Pamela Dolby.

Highway superintendent Stuart Fuller said if the weather cooperates, the project should be completed by the weekend.

Kristy Rose, assistant to the town administrator, received a positive annual review.

“She makes life much easier,” said selectman and board chairman Arthur Smadbeck. “Everything is well organized and everything works pretty well.”

The selectmen also postponed a decision on an application for a seasonal beer and wine license for the Greenhouse restaurant, which is due for review by the town zoning board of appeals. Patrick and Ted Courtney are proposing a 49-seat restaurant at the location off South Water street.
