As of the writing of this article, Springfield was hit with a tornado and many homes near there were hit with lightning and hail as large as golf balls. So there are no complaints from this writer, only well wishes and prayers for those in other areas of Massachusetts.

As we went to bed on Wednesday, we heard hail falling against our windows in Edgartown. We went downstairs to find marble-sized hail on our front steps. I have to admit that, knowing what just happened in Springfield and other towns around there, we were a little nervous. So our thoughts are with those people who now are homeless and have businesses that need rebuilding and a long road of repair before them.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Hanna Kim and Heather Kirwin, who celebrated their day on May 21; Ryan Murray, May 25; Nathaniel Garcia and Micah Simmons, May 26; Dauphine Michel, May 28; Michelle Herrick, May 31; Jonathan De Oliveira, June 2; and to Kaleb Hatt and Alicia Nelson, who celebrate their day today, June 3.

Belated but special wishes go to Kristine Ivory, who celebrated her day May 27.

Happy birthday to my best friend and husband, Ralph, who celebrates his day today, June 3.

Special balloons go to Hilda Mitchell, who celebrates her day on June 8.

I still can’t believe that Memorial Day has come and gone. It was a busy weekend and it was great to see people that we have known for years that came back for the summer.

Join Rick Bausman for a drumming program in Felix Neck’s Old Stone Amphitheatre. All ages are welcome to drum with Rick Bausman on Sunday, from June 5, from 3 to 4 p.m. It’s free — but registration is required, so give Felix Neck a call.

Tom Dresser is happy and proud of his new book, The Wampanoag Tribe of Martha’s Vineyard: Colonization to Recognition, that has just been published and is available locally. The book is a history of the tribe, with interviews and brief biographies of key members of the tribe. It is a readable story which brings the Island history into focus. Edgartown Books should have autographed copies!

Ted Morgan had a busy day on Tuesday. He was followed around by a news reporter and a camera for being a World War II veteran. They followed his daily life and ended the day with family and friends at the home of his daughter, Pam Dolby, and her husband, Michael. It was a great honor to participate in the activities and we are proud of Ted and his service to us all these years.

The coverage will be aired Monday June 6, at 6:30 p.m. on CBS.

Have a great week, and keep the home candles burning.
